My relationship with my dad is about the same… He was violent and utterly rude and hateful at times. But once I moved out to college things changed. He no longer talks to me as if I’m ignorant and immature. When I got engaged he became even more nice and loving, which is very odd for a guy who’s never shown any positive emotions and I can’t tell if I like it or not lol.

I wasn’t planning on doing a daddy-daughter dance, but when I asked if he wanted to do one, he had the biggest smile and said how he’d love to. Despite him never being kind or sentimental, I figured I’ll give him once chance to before I move out across the country for good! Our song will be “isn’t she lovely”

Following. I am in a similar situation and am having a hard time coming up with a song too. Right now I’m leaning toward “Gracie” by Ben Folds.

I let my dad pick our song. He chose My Wish by Rascal Flatts. It is a LONG song and we are awkward dancers at best. I wish I’d had the DJ shorten the song. We were both super relieved when it was finally over.

That said – letting my dad choose the song was one of the best things I could have done (even though it was too long and a little sappy for my tastes).  It made the whole thing more meaningful for both of us, I think.

I did “There You’ll Be” by Faith Hill.  I had a great childhood, but some of the wording used can fit any situation.

“There You’ll Be”

<div style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Verdana, Arial; font-size: 13.4px; text-align: center; background-color: #ccccdd;”>When I think back
On these times
And the dreams
We left behind
I’ll be glad ’cause
I was blessed to get
To have you in my life
When I look back
On these days
I’ll look and see your face
You were right there for me</div>
<div style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Verdana, Arial; font-size: 13.4px; text-align: center; background-color: #ccccdd;”> </div>
<div style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Verdana, Arial; font-size: 13.4px; text-align: center; background-color: #ccccdd;”> </div>
<div style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Verdana, Arial; font-size: 13.4px; text-align: center; background-color: #ccccdd;”>And……</div>
<div style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Verdana, Arial; font-size: 13.4px; text-align: center; background-color: #ccccdd;”> </div>
<div style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Verdana, Arial; font-size: 13.4px; text-align: center; background-color: #ccccdd;”>There will always be a place
For you for all my life
I’ll keep a part
Of you with me
And everywhere I am
There you’ll be</div>

alex0310 :  i was just going to start the exact same topic! We love each other but arent’t too close and are both a little weird and fucked up… and have mixed history, so I don’t want a sappy “you’re my precious snowflake babygirl… and you’re the best father ever.. ” type song.

It would also be a bonus if it was a rock song or an oldies. I’m having then hardest time coming up with an appropriate song.  Ugh. Sorry I’m no help, I’m here to see suggestions.

I have a great relationship with my dad but i’m not into sappy so I used “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac which is more of a song about reflection than about fathers/daughters but it still applied.

stephaniee24 :  Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton is a romantic song about a couple going to a party, getting drunk and then going to bed together at the end of the night. I would cringe so hard if I ever saw a father/daughter dance to that.

alex0310 :  I feel like Just Fishin’ could be a good one for you based on what you mentioned about sports and coaching. At the time, it was just sports, but looking back thats the bond you had and the memories you made which kinda relates to the song?

On the other hand, you can just pick a song that you both love that has nothing to do with anything. My dad and I are dancing to Drops of Jupiter which is not exactly a traditional father daughter dance song, but we used to sing it in the car. If there is a song or band that you both happen to really like (even if you didn’t sing it together in the car), that might work too!
