I am hitting a wall when it comes to favors. My wedding is an elegant evening affiar in a mansion on a Friday night (in like 90 days, OMG).
I have no idea what I’m doing for favors. Our centerpieces are wine bottles we have collected and cut the bottoms off of to make candles like this:
The table placecards will be ivory, framed with a bit of deep plum and stuck into corks.
And our cake will be sitting on the top of a wine crate. That is as far as we went with the “wine” theme (no grapes or anything like that) because we didn’t want to overstate it.
So now I’m stuck on favors. My original thought was to have stemless wine glasses monogrammed with our wedding date… but now I’m wondering if I should?
We have a guest list of 90. 10 of those guests are children aged 2 – 16, and while I don’t KNOW that the parents will bring the younger ones, I’m just going to assume they will. So… Is it poor taste to have wine themed favors?
Also, it’s going to run us about $130 which is way expensive… but we’ll have a whole set of cute monogrammed glasses to ourselves plus one for each guest.
I assume I should put some sort of edible goody in the glasses. (I was thinking of cherry cordial kisses which have a deep burgundy wrapper, to mimic merlot). Or I could find any number of appropriately colored v-day candy if I act soon…
Thoughts? How would you feel if your 5 year old child was attending a wedding with you and got a wine glass full of candy?? Also… would you keep a glass or just toss it?? I definately DO NOT want $130 worth of glasses getting thrown away…Should I scrap the glass idea, save some money for the honeymoon… and do something else? Suggestions welcome!

I am a pretty permissive parent and I wouldn’t mind my kid getting that as a favor. I am serving milk in martini glasses with a mini chocolate chip cookie to the 30 kids at my wedding for cocktail hour. And we may do child friendly jello shots for cocktail hour too. but that is ME and I know my family and friends will not be offended! Since it is a classy elegant affair it should be ok is my thought.

Ps. I LOVE your wine bottle centerpeice idea! What did you use to cut the bottoms off?

I think as long as you have an obviously kid friendly candy – maybe Hersheys Kisses – in the kid glasses, you should be fine.

There have been many previous posts about personalized gifts as favors. Many of them end up left on the table at the reception or get donated or tossed when the guest arrives home.
I would not use or keep a personalized wine glass. I would not want one glass that was different from the rest of my crystal.
In the interest of full disclosure, I admit that I think most favors are unnecessary and a complete waste of money.

i would toss the glass. i wouldnt keep someone else’s monogram displayed. i havent gotten a wineglass but my cousin did shotglasses with their names and wedding date, and that went in the trash. i dont think you have to go all out with the favor by doing a glass. i love edible favors—maybe just simply do some cordials for adults and regular chocolate for kids. im always happy with edible favors.

I am having shot glasses as my favors and I never thought people would throw them away, I did think to not order one for EVERYone cause not all my guests take shots. For 200 adults I was only gonna order 125, I always break my wine glasses and would love a free one, but yeah, I used to chair the bar at my sons school auction and a lot of the parents said to stop doing the wine glass thing cause they toss them 🙁 I am still doing my shot glasses though because I want them, and if I have like 50 left over, I would really be ok with that…cause when we do shots at parties we always need LOTS of shot glasses:)

Could you do bottle stoppers? Kids don’t usually care about wedding favours anyways and would probably just give it to their parents.

What about something like this? Customized to your colors, in clear candy bags w/ pretty ribbon? You could have a crafty friend/ family member make them. http://www.etsy.com/listing/83255427/custom-label-wine-and-grape-sugar?utm_source=catchmyparty&utm_medium=api&utm_campaign=api

Thank you all SO much for taking the time to reply 🙂
I actually really like the cookie idea! It might be a great option as it’s appropriate, and I’m not going to want to cry if people throw them away LOL.

Hi! We are actually doing a wine/travel theme for 90 people too (honestly as I read this, I thought to myself– it sounds exactly like us!!)
Anywho, I came across these today, as I too am paranoid about favors ending up in a junk drawer. Thoughts?:

I think maybe plain wine glasses would be cute and the sherry glasses for the kids would be cute. Fill them up with the candy you liked and for the kids they have those champagne bottle bubbles. Or even if you want to go really easy/cheap.themed, just those champagne bottle looking bubble bottles (they are about an inch tall) it would fit with the theme but also the kids would LOVE them, and even the adults! I ALWAYS love bubbles! 🙂
