ButternutPoppy :  My dad uses Ancestry.com and really likes it. He’s actually traced his dad’s side of the family back to the Mayflower, and he’s traced his mom’s side of the family back to like 1780 or so. He’s been able to connect with several distant relatives, and even found some of our Irish relatives that still live in Ireland before he and his siblings took my grandmother there a few years back. We all also did the DNA kits which were really neat.

I used ancestry and it was amazing ! Just by putting in as much info as I know (up to great great grandparents) I was able to add other people’s work to my tree and it went back to the 1600s. I believe you can get a one month free trial (that’s what I did) and after I discontinued the trial, it was still nice because I could access my tree and sent out email invites to other family members to view it.

ButternutPoppy :  I think in the paid version of Ancestry.com, you can message people? I’m not exactly sure how he contacted them, but I think some were through that site. I know some of the people he has just searched them on Facebook. He just reached out to a relative in Ireland that he found on Ancestry.com, googled their name, found out they worked at a university, found their email address on said university’s website, e-mailed that address to find out he’s no logner working there, but contacted the registrar at the university and asked if they would forward his (my dad’s) contact info to the retired professor, and the guy actually reached out to my dad a few days later.

We are planning on taking a trip to Ireland either next year or the following, once my dad retires. He has several family members that want to meet up with us when we visit. I’m so excited for it – I’ve wanted to visit Ireland for a long time.

I was given my grandmothers family tree back to about the 1700s by posting a message on genforum.com about my great grandfather. Some woman had been tracing it for years.I get most of my good information from posting about ancestors on the family history forums,I was recently given my gx4 grandfathers journal that way.
