One of my really good friends just got her first apartment and I am so excited for her. I want to get her a nice gift but Im stuck. She doesn’t need any kitchen stuff so that stuff is out.
What have been some of your favorite gifts?

ooh gift cards are always awesome. when we moved into our place, my aunt came by with a nice laundry basket (one that doesn’t hurt your hands!) full of paper towels, toilet paper, mr clean sponges, dish soap, laundry detergent, candles, matches, napkins, salt and pepper, dish towels, lysol wipes and spray, toilet cleaner, etc – all sorts of basics you totally forget about and can ALWAYS use more of!
you could also get her a really nice frame (if she enjoys pictures), a cool piece of art for the wall – etsy has some really awesome things, a welcome sign to hang on her door, some fun candles (different shapes, colors), a fun tray for her coffee table..possibilities are endless! Marshall’s and TJ Maxx often have fun, funky home things 🙂

@7SEVENJ9: Haha those are my favorite gifts too!! It’s an apartment though so she doesn’t really need paint, tools, etc.

Hmmm for apartments, whenI had a housewarming, I always enjoyed getting wine, haha.
Home Goods/TJMaxx/Marshalls always have really cool/cute decor items, that’s my favorite place for little gifts/knickknacks.
Another nice one someone got us was a bottle of wine, a bottle of olive oil, a package of gourmet spaghetti (organic) and a jar of fancy spaghetti sauce along with some candles for a little “date night” for my husband and me!

I’ve never had a housewarming party, but my favorite gift to get from guests is always wine. You can never have too much wine and it’s a nice treat to share a bottle with Darling Husband a few days after hosting a big party.
Things like kitchen items are not really welcome presents because we have waaay too many of all these things. Like wine holders/openers, serving trays, potholders, etc. I also do not like getting decor items unless it’s a small scented candle.
If you can afford it, get her a fancy candle like a Jo Malone or a really nice bottle of wine. I also like the previous suggestions of gift cards, although be careful because they can also be kind of an imposition if the receiver doesn’t ever shop at the store you get it from. For example my in-laws keep buying me gift cards to Macys and the truth is I prefer not to shop there. The store near me is a tourist destination, super crowded and overpriced and doesn’t carry any brand names I like. So one day I’m going to gather up all my gift cards from them, bite the bullett and buy some underwear or something.
I actually sent my friend an Amex gift card as a housewarming present once and she used it towards lighting fixtures from the store of her choice. But I wouldn’t have known that she preferred Restoration Hardware and she probably didn’t know until she found them.

Some of my favourite gifts were small house plants (bamboo, cactus, orchids) and then a big tub with gardening supplies. I realize this won’t work for someone who lives in an apartment, but I always love to get “gift baskets” of necessities!
