I have had good success with Old Navy, Target, Kohl’s, and JCPenney.  I also have bought a lot of tops on clearance at the Motherhood Maternity Outlet.  My favorite 2 pairs of jeans are from Kohl’s – they were a little pricey but luckily I got them on sale and used a coupon.  I love the maternity tanks from JCPenney – my chest has gotten much larger and these tanks have a shelf bra that actually covers me so they’re good for layering.  Target’s clothes fit a little smaller compared to Old Navy’s, but they are working well for me right now during my second trimester.  Definitely go for tops with the side ruching – so much more flattering and they show off your bump!

all of my maternity clothes are from motherhood maternity, and i love them. in fact, i think the jeans are amazing and only forty bucks. so far, stuff from target and old navy just has not worked for me.

@winniewolf:  I ended up being the opposite! I loved full-panel jeans when I first started wearing them about 15 weeks. But now that I’m big, I like under-the-belly. The full panel is no longer big enough to cover my belly, it only comes up to about my belly button, so you can see the line of the panel through my shirt and it’s always falling down. I would say 2nd trimester get the full-panel, and 3rd trimester get the under the belly.

I second gap maternity. THIS is my favorite item, just a basic tank. The ruching is so comfortable and I wear it layered under everything. I also got a few maternity t’s that I love of theirs, but I bought them a size bigger and I’m so glad I did – because at 38 weeks I’m not liking form-fitting clothes, so the looser tees are really comfortable. I think I’ll like that post-partum too.

Otherwise I suggest finding some non-maternity staples.

The only maternity items I really NEEDED were: a couple basic tanks like the one from gap, two pairs of maternity jeans, 2 maternity t’s, 1 maternity long sleeve, 1 maternity sweater. (If you’re working in a business office, add in 2 pairs work pants and some more business-like tops, I worked in a casual environment so jeans + tees were perfect).

Then I supplemented non-maternity pieces – jackets/blazers for layering (you just can’t close them!), scarves, other “bigger” tees have worked splendidly, cardigans have been great, open-front sweaters, and for at home – comfy sweats/lounge pants and my husbands tees/sweatshirts!

Good luck! It’s overwhelming sometimes but I would suggest buying pieces gradually as you need them. I got excited at 14 weeks and bought $150 worth of clothes from Motherhood and didn’t end up wearing half of them because I found out as I went along that some styles just aren’t as comfortable anymore. So you need to know what works for you.
