Pronovias on 5th Ave for sure. Their dresses are stunning, the salo is fun and you get the full bridal experience. But the dresses start at $1K!

Go to RK Bridal.  It’s a bit like the Marshall’s of wedding salons, but very worth it.  They have dresses from low to high end.  But you need to know what you are looking for before you go there.  It’s first come, first served, so I’d try to do it on a weekday if possible.  You go, put your name on a list and then pick out 7 dresses you like and wait for a consultant.  When it’s your turn you try on the dresses, the consultant pulls more as you narrow it down.

I was there nearly 2 hours (trying on dresses), probably tried on close to 20 dresses.  No pressure, no stress, and I got the dress I wanted that I have since found out is being sold other places for nearly twice the cost.

This is a no frills place, so don’t expect champagne — or even chairs in the waiting area.  But it was by far the best of the lot.

I checked out The Bridal Garden in NYC. http://www.bridalgarden.org/

Samples at very decent prices. Some of them need a little TLC but I think definitely worth checking out. I remember I tried on a really pretty Anne Barge ballgown and it needed a little work but they only wanted $900 for it.

It’s a different experience than a traditional bridal gown store, you don’t really have customer service (which I liked, because I preferred to be on my own without someone pressuring me) so go with a friend to help with an outside eye. But I got a great idea of what styles I liked and didn’t like very quickly.

As with most bridal stores, try really hard NOT to go on a weekend. During the week is much quieter if you can do that.
