I never seem to like anything popular, especially when it comes to movies. Usually when there’s a lot of hype, I tend to avoid them like the plague and wait until the pandemonium dies down before I watch them so I can make up my own mind about it, and not just say I liked it like everyone else did. This includes Twilight, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Avatar, and pretty much every comic book super hero movie that has come out in the past 10 years.
What are your favorite movies that you discovered all on your own that most people have never even heard of?

Before Sunrise/Before Sunset. Like most Linklatter movies, it’s a LOT of dialogue, but they’re very well written and fascinating.

Ghost world, Hackers, Pump up the volume, Revolver, Benny & Joon.

I like The Fall directed by Tarsem. It is visually stunning. The main character is a little girl who is adorable.

- Wedding: August 2013 - Brookfield Zoo
Galaxy Quest!! haha… no, really.

Sherrybaby comes to mind. It’s an independent movie starring Maggie Gyllenhal that no one seems to have heard of.
From Dusk Til Dawn — Clooney in a horror movie!
Also, Oldboy, which I wouldn’t say is underrated, just not well known.

Life as a house
Playing by heart
All really great movies with tons of known actors but didn’t really get any hype!
I recommend them all. They cover the genres too: Life as a house is drama, The Island is sci-fi and Playing by heart is drama/chick flicky

@PixelMePretty: Ghost World! Love that movie!

I’m obsessed with almost everything Kevin Smith does. (original) clerks, mall rats, chasing amy. Dogma too but that was actually semi-popular for a minute.

I think it’s awesome that Lord of the Rings became so popular…I was a big nerd when I was little for liking it. =)
Movies that are more obscure…um…Harold and Maude is a good one that I love. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. Better Off Dead. Those might be popular, though, I don’t know.

@hotchildinthecity: LOVED Oldboy. They’re doing an American remake soon, which will probably be not as good.
Cop Out–FI and I liked it a lot, but I know some people hated it. What’s not to love about Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis in a buddy-cop comedy?
Paul–I barely even remember being advertised, but I really enjoyed it. Seth Rogen plays an alien who has to get back to his home planet.

“It’s complicated”. For some reason, I love this movie, and most people I know just don’t. Also, “Big Fish”.

Departures. Japanese movie that came out a few years ago, and it’s wonderful.

@Crindy: I heard about the remake and cringed. The only thing that made me sadder was the idea of Kristen Stewart in a remake of Martyrs *vom*
I thought Cop Out was hilarious.
