He’s your Dad’s best friend. He’s not going to think you invited them just to get a gift.

I would definitely send the invitation. They may be hurt if you don’t.

Since its your dad’s best friend they will know it came from him, not some “obscure person”.

I’ve gotten invitations from people back in my home town (I moved across the country a few years ago) and they knew i’d be unable to attend, mostly I would think invitations are just letting them know you thought of them, and they mean something to you, whether they’re friends, family, or friends of family. I definitely didn’t think I was invited for the gift.

They probably love seeing it on the fridge and will like having the invitation as a keepsake too.

We had a few relatives of DH’s we knew wouldn’t be able to make it, so when we called them up asking for their mailing address we basically said, “No pressure, we know you probably won’t be able to make the trip, we just wanted to make sure you knew we were thinking of you and wishing you could share the big day with us.” They definitely appreciated it.
