So ladies and gents, I got into my first fender bender last night. I wouldn’t really call it an all out car accident, but it certainly was an accident.
So here’s the deal. He came down from the top of the cul de sac towards the main road to pull out of our complex. You turn off the main road, and we’re the first right. The townhouses are set up in a U pattern with the front doors facing out and the parking spaces in front of the houses. After he passed me, I pulled out of my parking space so I was behind him also waiting to pull out of the complex as well. The space to turn back on to the main road is just wide enough for a car to come in and a car to go out. He was pulled up in the center with his nose edged out in traffic, so I kept to the right side behind him in case he needed to move/backup, or in the event that after he pulled out another car would need to pull in, that way I wasn’t blocking traffic. Unfortunately, people park on the main road as close to this entrance/exit point, and with the angles the road turns, you literally cannot see if any traffic is coming from EITHER direction unless you edge out to the point of blocking traffic. Well, that’s what he did, and when traffic came, they slowed down because he was blocking them (why they didn’t go around him or he didn’t just go since they stopped, I don’t know) so he went to back up to get out of the way. He’s in a truck, I’m in a small dark car, and he didn’t see me. So when he backed up he scraped my car from the door jam to the back wheel on my driver’s side.
Here’s the best part though. I’ve always thought I would come out fists blazing, but I didn’t. He pulled forward, we both looked at the damage and just sighed. I joked “I was doing so well too”. I hadn’t hit anybody, and so far everyone who has hit me has done minimal damage (door ding, scuff on the bumper, NBD). He was on his way to something (I could tell he was rushed by the way he flew down from the top of the cul de sac) and I had to go to class which I was already late for to turn in my last piece of homework since next week we’re done for Aerobic Fitness. So, we exchanged numbers. He lives in the complex, so I know where he is. And we agreed that we would talk later for insurance information and such. We didn’t call the police because nobody was injured and neither of us really had the time to deal with them. They’d probably just say, “private property, both of you are at fault, have a nice day”. You know?
I filed an online claim last night with my insurance company when I got home and took pictures of my car, his truck, and got the make/model/license plate of his truck (yep, sitting in front of his house) this morning. Got the appraiser coming to access the damage on Friday morning, should get my car in the shop by Monday, with my rental covered for up to 20 days. Worse case? He doesn’t have insurance and I have to pay $200 for my deductable and I get to cruise in a new car for a few days.
I have to say, I’m in a good mood this morning despite it. In fact, I’m downright chipper!
However, I have to add an air of caution. My fender bender is one of FOUR I’ve heard of this area of people I know in less than 24 hours!
BE CAREFUL ON THE ROADS PLEASE! WEAR YOUR SEATBELTS AND STAY VIGILANT!
