Is he introverted or shy? Does he have social anxiety or trouble talking to people?

Perhaps you can talk to him, listen and ask questions about his interests. Maybe he is a jerk, but maybe he needs to spend some time around you to really open up and chat.

maybe he’s just a jerk. you’re not marrying him anyway, and it’s not like he’s making your life miserable, so i say just tolerate him the best you can.

@alyssaC:  Sometimes these things take time. Some people struggle with making new relationships. For example, when Darling Husband and I were dating and he first introduced me to his father, his father looked at me, turned around, and walked out of the door without saying a word. I was so upset, and Darling Husband followed him and went off on him. Now 8 years later, he tells every one I’m his favorite daughter-in-law. Things aren’t perfect with us, but we’ve gone a long way from the first introductions.

@alyssaC:  Well Darling Husband and I were in a LDR for about 5 of the 8 years we’ve been together. His father didn’t actually try to have a real conversation with me until about year 3 when he realized that Darling Husband and I were in it for the long haul. Darling Husband says his father didn’t hate or dislike me. It was more that he wasn’t going to waste his time or effort building a relationship with someone who may not be around permanently.

Kill him with kindness.

If you are nothing but nice to him (even when all you want to do it scream at him for being so bloody rude) you will be seen as the kind, considerate, future-daughter-in-law and he will simply look like an ass for ignoring you; especially when everyone else can see how much effort you make to be nice to him.
