IMO, its your and your FI’s wedding day.  You shouldn’t have to give reasoning for your guys decision, but family needs give their opinion on everything, unfortunately.  I say, go with your friend if that’s what you truely want and explain to your Future Father-In-Law that this yours and your FI’s day, not his, and that you trust that your friend will do a great job!

Darling Husband and I had a somewhat similar dilemma.  We wanted DH’s good friend, that I’ve become close with as well, to officate our wedding.  My family, friends and DH’s friends know him as being a bit of a “crazy party animal.”  They gave us second glances, laughed and asked if we were really serious.  My grandmother even got a little upset, afraid he would make a mockery of it.  Darling Husband and I, though, know “D”‘s other more appropriate, caring and gentleman side, so we just kept reassuring everyone that we’re very excited and we are positive he will do a great job.  Needless to say, D did a FANTASTIC job (even choked up a bit at the beginning and shed a small tear) and everyone was VERY impressed!  I’m so glad we stuck with our decision!
