I noticed a lot of guys don’t relate to this issue, so they don’t understand why women sometimes get uneasy walking alone at night. When I moved in with my now husband, I moved to a sketchier/more lively neighborhood in a bit city. My husband knows this and will usually meet me a few blocks closer to the main shopping area, so I don’t have to walk on our block alone. There are times when he’s already home and tired, so he gives me a little push back about meeting me which is understandable; I wouldn’t want to leave the house if I’m already in bed. Before I got married, my friends and I had a buddy system when we went out late at night. One of my friends got mugged near her home a few times, so she gets nervous walking from her car (street parking) to her house. My mom always made me carry a pocket knife in my backpack in college and in high school and now I keep pepper spray on my key chain (and it ready in my pockets) when I walk alone at night.
Coincidentally, I was discussing a similar topic with guys last night. I work in the tech industry with mostly guys and was tossing around an idea for a buddy/notification mobile app. Since the guys didn’t get the problem, they pretty much dismissed the idea.
