So my Fiance works as an X-Ray tech. He keeps telling me of someone he works with at the hospital that “used to DJ” and would DJ for us cheap to help us out. I’m very wary of this. Does that sound fishy to you? Am I being a snob or unreasonable? It would save us money, but if the music sucks the bad reception wouldn’t be worth it. Our venue is a smallish patio so I’m not even sure if we need someone who reads the crowd because there won’t even be room to dance. But still…
One thing that my Fiance said made me more alert. Fiance said the guy would bring in someone else to take over halfway though cause he would be “bored as sh**.” I don’t know if those are FI’s words or the coworkers… not a good sign huh?

Uh I was on board with letting him DJ until I read that last comment. Just because he’s not a DJ anymore doesn’t mean he won’t do a good job or read the crowd etc. Especially if he knows your Fiance (and you) it will be easy to know what to play etc. But if he or your Fiance said he’ll be bored…ummm he can go kick rocks! Lol. What does that even mean, he’ll have someone come and takeover for him in the middle? Sketch.

I had the same problem. My Fiance wanted to get his old high school buddy to DJ for cheap. After several weeks and debating I ended up booking a professional DJ. My DJ will do introductions, play different types fo music for all ages, has lighting, cordless microphone, suggested songs, knows exact timeline because has been doing it for years…. CRITICAL STUFF in my opinion. Not taking my chances with a friend JUST TO SAVE MONEY. Good luck.

We had one of DHs coworkers do the DJ, he did a good job except that his computer crashed the night before so he lost some of the songs that we had requested. If they had been a pro, they would have had that system on a backup. To me, missing a few trivial songs was worth the $2000 we saved. Overall, I was pleased with the job that he did and he was very sweet to do it for the $200 he asked for. We did throw in a card for dinner for him and his wife to a nice restaurant as a thank you.
