I think he’s getting into dangerous territory there.  He may not be in financial trouble now, but that sounds like the direction he’s heading.

Sounds like he is dancing with a gambling addiction.

I am getting nervous for you… I sure hope he knows where to drow the line but when he bought MORE lottery with the money he just won… hmmm… I’m nervous.

But the “win a trip” “win an excursion” thing I feel is fine. I saw on TV a family who is into winning things. They win alllllllllllll kinds of things. They have all these tips for wining. It looked like a pain in the butt to me but they have fun doing it. However, they don’t gamble.

Red Flag for gambling addiction. My husband calls the lottery a stupid people tax. It’s one thing to have a pool with X people with Y dollars that happens once every Z, but what you’re talking about is excessive, obsessive, and addictive. He is only a short walk from losing everything in Vegas or buying thousands of lottery tickets “because according to the math, if he buys this many tickets, then…” You can see where this is going. Put on the breaks now and get him help.

Just because someone can afford their gambling addition does not make it okay.

my FI’s coworkers 500 million! They pooled together and bought 200-300 dollars worth of lotto… unfortunately Fiance was absent that day!

 — HE WENT NUTS with buying lotto after.

It sounds like ur Fiance has an interesting hobby– doesnt sound like an additcion for many reasons

1- he knows his limit, hes not spending more than he has

2- hes entering free things, in his free time– no harm there

3- hes also doing all of these things socially! which most gamblers do not do

ANYWAY— I would voice your concerns. Talk about what the money could go for. Explain that you feel he is loosing more than making and you are worried.

I’d maybe be a little bit worried.

While I personally think playing lotteries is stupid financially, I can see how an occasional lottery-play can be an entertainment – a day spent thinking of the possibilities of a big jackpot…  A office pool to be social with coworkers and cheer or gripe about sports stuff.  Cheap entertainment for a buck or two.

It’s when it gets to be more than an entertainment that I can see a problem.  Obsessions are rarely good.  If it takes money away from other things that are needed then its a problem.

Maybe you and he could put a limit on it – like $5-$10 a week or whatever you both think is reasonable.  He can allocate it as he wants – scratch offs, sports pools, power ball, etc.  I think money won should go back to the household pool, not to other tickets, unless you decide that’s OK between you.

I think the online contest entries will eventually subside when nothing comes of them but spam and wasted time.
