I don’t know if this is just a vent thread or if I need some advice …
My fiance has always liked playing the lottery, scratch off tickets, giveaway contests, etc.
But recently it’s gotten really … obnoxious?
Him and a group of guys at work chip something like $5 every week towards a multi-million dollar lottery drawing. And sometimes he buys $1 – $5 scratch off tickets. Okay, fine. No big deal.
But now he is getting into football polls and those stupid “school/church/VFW random lottery drawing” things where you give, like, $25-$100 and you have a chance to win $1000 every month or whatever.
And the other day, he won $75 from scratch off tickets, which is great … except instead of keeping the money, he bought MORE lottery tickets with the money!
And today he literally spent over an hour entering “win this Harley Davidson/Win a trip to Australia/Win a Hawaaiin excursion” online.
I’m all about having fun and playing games and everything, and it’s not like he’s gotten into any trouble (financial or otherwise) with these things, but should I be worried?
Every time he plays the Powerball for example, he launches into these hour long monologues about the pros and cons of the lump sum vs the annuity. He calculates the taxes. He talks about what he’d do with the money, which lawyers he’d contact, which charities he’d donate to, etc. It’s SO obnoxious. I don’t know how to tell him politely. Sure, it’s great to dream about winning a million bucks every once in awhile but when he talks about it every WEEK …. ugh.
Is this weird? Am I over reacting?
Again, he’s not in any debt or trouble with this stuff. Mainly it’s just annoying. Am I weird? Is he?
