My fiancé is Spanish and we currently live in Barcelona. Our plan is to move back to California and have the wedding there. Of course, to do that we need to have the fiancé visa approved. We filed in August and the wedding date is set for April 16, 2011. We thought that would be enough time but recently I´ve been reading lots of blogs saying that it can take up to a year! That would be a disaster for us, because not only have we put down a deposit for the venue, some of my FI´s family has already bought their flights for the wedding! Has anyone out there gone through this process recently? If so, how long did it take from beginning to end?

For the K1, it was 9 months for us. We filed in the beginning of Dec and got it in the middle of August.

I realize you’re not a long distance couple, but there are a few LDR couples dealing with visas on the LDR board – maybe some of their experiences could help you?
*2010* K1 Visa Bees!! Are you with me??
Wish me luck girls, I’m sending my I-129F…
And a few more from the legal board:
Fiance (K-1) Visa needed if we’re not staying in the US?
Fiancée Visa got approved!!!!
Traveling to the US while waiting for a K1 visa
Good luck! I hope everything works out smoothly!
PS – some venues/vendors will let you use your original deposit for a different date if you need to push back the wedding for visa reasons. Talk with your potential vendors about how flexible they can be if you need them to be, and find someone who will work with you, not against you!
I would also encourage family members to get trip insurance on their flights – it’s not super cheap, but it’s cheaper than totally re-booking! And you can often add it after you book. 🙂
