- Wedding: March 2011
Our wedding is going to be in Iowa. We live in Texas. Originally, based on the assumption that many would not travel for our wedding, we’d planned to have the reception here in Texas, after we got home, and in planning that, my best friend was going to make the cake. She’s done so for many years on a quasi-pro level.
Well as it turns out we are getting enough early feedback about our wedding to think that it might be possible to have a small reception there if enough people do indeed come and we’re going to go with a small retaurant reception if so.
At this point our guest list is at 50 people but it’s highly likely we’ll end up with a max of 30 or less who actually attend. I don’t know if my best friend will be able to come… she’s starting nursing school this Fall and she’s kind of flakey when it comes to travel. So I don’t want to absolutely count on her to make the cake in Iowa (though we’ll be renting out a house with a full kitchen so it is possible).. and if she ends up not doing it I don’t know what to do about getting a cake.
Where we’re marrying is a small town (8,000 people) and I’ve only found reviews for one or two bakeries online. One only does cheesecake (which I love), but Fiance hates cheesecake. There are also 2 grocery stores and a wal-mart. I nixed Walmart off the bat because at least here in Texas (in our city anyway) their baked goods are nasty. So the grocery stores and one or two bakeries are our options but it’s hard to investigate from here.
We will arrive in Iowa on a Saturday and the wedding is on a Thursday but cakes have to be ordered way ahead, don’t they? And I don’t want to order anything without tasting it first… so I don’t know what to do.
Do you think we could still taste and order a cake with only a couple days to do it if we only need a small one?
I thought about cupcakes because I know I can handle that myself but not sure if it’s wise. Plus, my baked goods tend to be yummy but not so pretty. We will be scrambling a bit as it is, since we will have details to finalize in those few days before the wedding.
Sorry for such a long post just about CAKE but while I don’t want anything huge or extravagant, we do want a wedding cake and above all else it must taste AWESOME… not sure how to do that from over 1000 miles away! And hopefully for not a whole lot of money…
