I’ve been wanting to get now-Fiance (! :]) a ring for quite a while now, but have put it off for a few reasons. 1) He doesn’t seem to like to wear jewellery 2) His career is very hands-on, and 3) I don’t know his ring size..
That being said, however, this past weekend after he proposed, he mentioned that he’d totally be into having one.. plus, we plan on getting married fairly soon, before we TTC our second child. I’ve found a great deal on eBay, and want to snatch it up as a surprise for him, but I’m afraid it may cost a pretty penny if we were to have it resized (rhodium-plating over brass).
Do any of you ladies have any idea how to go about getting a guy’s ring size without them knowing? He has no rings I could base measurements off of, and I think his guess of a size 13 is way off-base (he’s been told many times how ‘feminine’ his long, slender fingers are)?

@brighteyedgirl: print off one of those paper size guides from kay jewelers website. size him up while he’s sleeping.

@brighteyedgirl: There’s no way to really know, but the normal size for a man’s ring is a size 10. So 13 probably is way off. That’s just a little smaller than my DH’s giant man hands.

Fiance wears a size 8.5 to get over his knuckle, but an 8 fits better once its on. I would not ever have guessed his fingers were that small. It’s really hard to guess a ring size, even the paper thnig is way off. The only real way to tell is to get him to try the ring sizers at the jewelers. Can you just take him to look at rings and get his size, then surprise him with the one you found?

Perhaps you can pick them out together – if he isnt someone to normally wear jewelry he may be picky on what he DOES wear – why not get him involved?

One day I took a ring that I wear on my ring finger and he was lookig at it and so I slipped it on his and it was just a tad small, but fit – that’s how I know what ring size he is!

Thanks for your suggestions, ladies.
Unfortunately I can’t size him while he’s sleeping, as we’re in an LDR at the moment (will be until August). Also, because he’s away for work, I won’t be seeing him much this summer (about once a month for a few hours, really), so ring shopping is kind of out of the question. :[ I guess I’m just going to suck it up, and buy the one I found.. and, maybe one a size smaller. Luckily, they’re such a great deal, I can afford too! LOL!

Can you have him go size himself and let you know?

I’d ask him to get his finger sized. I knew that Boyfriend or Best Friend had kind of small fingers, but I would never have guessed that he was a size 7 until we got him sized.

Just go to the jewlery store and get sized. My Fh and I just went while we were at the mall one day.

I don’t think you can really know without him trying on rings. plus, the size he prefers can be different depending on how thick the band is (thick bands feel tighter)or whether or not it’s a comfort fit band.
I agree with Shae726. surprise him with the ring and if it doesn’t fit, get it resized. be sure it’s a kind of ring that can be resized–it pretty much has to be made of gold, silver or platinum. you will be hard pressed to find a jeweler who will work with any other material. also, if the ring is covered all over in some kind of intricate detail work, it likely can’t be resized.

I’m confused – if you’re engaged, why would you need to be secretive about getting his ring size? Obviously you need it for the wedding band, just tell him to go to the store and get himself sized.

@Wonderstruck: I don’t need to be secretive about it, but I thought it might be a nice surprise. That’s all. :]

@brighteyedgirl: Can you get him to size himself for a wedding band “just so you know for when the time comes” and then go ahead and buy his suprise ring?
