I struggled for months and months to find a band I liked, since I wanted something pretty and detailed (as compared to a plain band). And I knew I wanted a lighter-coloured gemstone in the middle – dark enough to have some lovely colour, but light enough to still sparkle and let a lot of light through. I was originally thinking aquamarine but after talking to a few jewellers, they convinced me to go for a light sapphire.
I sat down with a few different jewellers and designed some rings but nothing felt right. I couldn’t articulate what I wanted very well, I think! And I was too nervous to pull the trigger based on their drawings. Eventually I found a ring (online!) that I kept coming back to and staring at, even though it was slightly different to what I originally thought I wanted, and eventually I decided that it was perfect.
It arrived and the band *was* beautiful, but the sapphire that had come with the ring was very very light grey (every time I showed people the ring I had to explain that it was a sapphire, not a diamond!) and, materialistically, it was a tiny bit smaller than I had thought (0.5 carat). So we went back to the jeweller and put him on the case, and yesterday I got it back with a BEAUTIFUL light blue 0.8 carat sapphire! It’s SO GORGEOUS!! I can’t stop staring at it! It changes colour every time I look at it, in different light and at different angles. I’m so happy.
Anyway, enough of that – here’s the ring porn! From the top:
From the side, so you can see some of the detailed engraving on the band:
And for comparison, here is the original stone:

Gosh, that is really pretty!! I’m probably coming from left field here, but I can picture it with a rose gold or yellow gold very thin pave wedding band. Stunning!

@sm_usagi: I have never seen a light blue sapphire…I’ve seen peach, pink, white, dark blue, but never a light blue! It’s SO pretty. Beautiful ring! Best wishes 🙂

@Anardana: It’s a Ceylon sapphire, cut in Thailand!
Thanks everyone, I admit to a little bit of anxiety how people (my family, etc) wil react to a sapphire engagement ring but as long as it is pretty and I love it, they will come around, right? Hahaha.
