Warning – I’m in a chatty mood! This is super long!
So the boyfriend let me know about a month ago that it’s safe for me to start looking at wedding things (started my brooch collection for a boquet!). I even bought Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses, but since coming here and realizing the plethora of options, I thoroughly confused myself and sunk into a hole of having know idea where to go! The dresses and other random things I had bought went back to the store lol.
I decided to start at the begining. Before a marriage comes the wedding, before the wedding comes the proposal. Boyfriend or Best Friend is going to have to get me a ring before he can propose to me. Oh no. Not good. I don’t even know what I want or like, how on earth is he going to know??
I don’t wear a whole lot of jewelry. Love it, but just never put it on. I’ve got a whole jewelry box full of funky earrings (hooray Target!), but I pretty much always stick with my simple pearl studs. I do love my pearls. Oh, and I have a James Avery charm bracelet that I always wear. I’m also the proud owner of an amethyst pendant necklance thanks to the bf that he got me for Valentine’s day. Amethyst because it’s HIS birthstone *rolls eyes*. Lucky for him purple is my favorite color. :p
I was thinking about my rather paltry jewelry collection, and realized, hey, I do have a fancy ring! My mom gave it to me for christmas, and I love it. So, let’s start there! I pulled it out (don’t wear it often because I’m *terrified* I’m going to lose it), and while quite familiar with the process of diamond formation (thanks Americus Diamond late night ridiculously informative infomercial! anyone know what I’m talking about? it’s a local thing) I never paid attention to all the stuff about clarity, cut, color, shape, etc etc. I pulled out this ring my mom got me and was like “hey, I really like this, but I have no idea what it’s called!”
Turns out after extensive research on gemstone cuts, and then realizing I could just go to the zales website, I’ve determined it’s a cushion cut!
Love love love this ring. Ok, so cushion cuts with a halo.
Came here to the best wedding board on the web and started devouring every ring post with pics I could find. I started combing through blue nile and becoming seriously depressed. There was no way I could talk the bf into paying for a stone as big as I want. It’s not a money thing, not that he doesn’t love me enough, just that we’re really not comfortable putting that much money into something that’s going to be dropped/rammed into things and most likely lost (I’m the worlds biggest klutz and super bad at misplacing things). As he tells me, he’d rather get me an engagement kia for that much money lol.
So, my e-ring hunt started to depress me. I have fat fingers. A little stone is just going to look littler. Then I looked at the brilliant earth ad here. Oh great, not only am I going to get a smaller stone than I really want, the one we can afford is going to be drenched in human sacrafice. Awesome.
Came back here and wistfully continued my hunt through photos. I noticed a few ladies posting pics of their Moissonite rings. Moissonite, what is this? I’ve never heard of it! Wikipedia’d it, and fell in love! Came back here, and read every post there’s ever been about the stone.
It’s such a perfect stone for me and the FFI (is that a term here? future fiancee? lol) because we are both HUGE nerds, and a rock simulated from a rock that came from space?? I just about had a nerdgasm. I looked at WhiteHydrangea’s post and video of her ring and seriously got tingles and a little teary. That “the dress” feeling people talk about here? I got it from a ring… over the internet. I think it’s meant to be lol!
I went through the moissaniteco website with a fine toothed comb and finally came down to three styles I really really like. All are cushion cut. I called my bf and told him what I had found. I thought he would scoff, tell me he’s not going to bother spending money on a fake diamond, etc etc. To my surprise, he was interested. I sent him the links to the three I liked, and he read the wiki article. In about three minutes, I had him convinced. Pretty sure it was the fact that mineral Moissanite is from space (he is a HUGE NASA nerd, has a binder FULL of autographs from astronauts) and the fact that it’s lab-grown which is a fascinating process (one of our fav shows is Breaking Bad; we love chemistry like my 15 year old sister loves clothes, makeup, and boys). And of course, he was super pleased with the price, and the fact that he can go ahead and get the band with the e-ring so it matches.
So hooray!! I get to have the supre pretty sparkly (another selling point, I told him it sparkles like rainbows and his response was “you love rainbows!” lol!) big stone I want, it’s going to be a super nerdy stone which satisfied both of us, and the price is right. I’m so happy!!!
These are the three styles I’ve narrowed it down to. The center stone will most likely be a “1.5ct” cushion cut. What do y’all think?
Ring 1: Antique
Ring 2: Tiffany Novo Style
Ring 3: Cushion with Halo
Thanks for sloshing through that post and for your input!! =D
