Recently I had a very heart breaking experience with my first and only (so far) hunt for my bridal gown. I went to 2 different salons in the OC area and was unable to try on any of the dresses I wanted to. I have a bigger butt, which posed a challenge for the style I wanted, being that they only carried 1 sample size per dress (all would not fit over my butt/hips…I believe they were size 8 or 10s). They tried to persuade me to change my dress style (A-Line, etc) but I did not like them, they are not me. I even tried some on to humor the assistant. In real-life, I’m a size 10/12 for my bottom. Some dresses I fit a size 8/9. Could anyone give me any suggestions for Los Angeles/surrounding area bridal boutiques/shops that carry larger sample sizes in mermaid/trumpet style dresses? I am in love with the Simone Carvalli 90122 type of look…it breaks my heart to think I won’t be able to try the dress I want to on and will have to blindly order a dress by “holding it up” against me. It’s a lot of money to spend and a very important day to play the guessing game.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I’m surprised you had such problems. I am a 12 street size (in pants) and was able to try on tons of mermaids and trumpets. In fact, probably 80% of the dresses I tried on where fitted. I went to designer boutiques that carried dresses starting at about $1000, but most of the ones I tried on were right about $2000 so it certainly wasn’t like I was at stores with vanity sizing (Alfred Angelo, David’s, etc.). The designer chooses the sample size, and most of the designers I tried on offered samples in size 12, which is more like street size 8, but I could definitely get them on and get a really good idea. One dress was a sample 8 and I couldn’t get it over my hips at all. I was trying on dresses by Marisa, Priscilla of Boston, Watters, Pronovias, Maggie Sottero, Allure, Demetrios… I’m sure there were others, but those I remember specifically. I wish I could help you on specifics in your location, but I do think you should have luck at other salons.
I found that wearing a slip or a longline bra helped a lot. The salons all offered such things to me.

@notoriousarp: Hello, I had a very simliar shopping experience. I was also looking for a fitted gown but I couldn’t get into the size 6 samples found at most salons. I was distraught & near tears after my first appointment.
You can try Sparkle in Sacramento, or Strut in Phoenix. Both specialize in plus sizing. I found my dress at Strut. I am not sure if either one carries Simone Carvalli.
Have you looked for consignment stores in OC? They may have a wider range of sizes.

I would say just call ahead to any and all bridal shops you would like to visit and ask if they would be able to accomodate your size in the dress style you want.
