I am doing my own makeup for my summer wedding and am starting to look at what extra products I might need to purchase for the big day. Some tutorials that I’ve looked at say to use finish powders, some say setting sprays, and some say both. Are both necessary?

The Urban Decay “All Nighter” spray is outstanding. I bought a bottle a couple months ago to try out and i can’t believe i have lived my life without it 🙂 If i do my makeup for work at 6/7 in the morning, it still looks perfect 12 hours later. It totally helps everything stay – eyes, face etc.

Commenting to follow as I’ve been wondering this too.

+1 for the Urban Decay “All Nighter” setting spray! I’m just afraid powders will mix with my makeup, I loved this product and a Sephora sales associate recommended it to me

@Modestia1991: I did my own makeup and used both and the results were amazing! My makeup needed no touch ups the entire day and that was even after I bawled through the entire ceremony. I also second some PPs suggestions of Urban Decay’s All Nighter setting spray. I use it every day and it is one of my favorite products by far.
Also make sure to use a primer and longwear foundation, I used Smashbox for both.

I use both if having an important event. My favorite setting spray is NYX Dewy finishing spray found at:
They also have it in a matte finish if you prefer at:
It works just like all of the big brands without the heavy price tag. I think I originally bought it on Amazon for less.

@Modestia1991: I would use a finishing spray for photography considerations. a lot of HD-type finishing powders might give you a white cast in pictures. I use Urban Decay De-Slick, spraing before applying anything to the face (as a primer), and after finishing my face makeup.

i use urban decay de-slick also and it works really well. i also use a long wearing foundation (almay truly lasting color) and monistat chafing gel as a primer (it works just as well as smashbox’s primer and is only, like, $5). i have the most oily skin in the world and my makeup lasts all day

All I know is that my MUA used finishing spray and it worked SOOO well! I literally had sweat dripping down my face (GROSS) during my first look in the vineyard because it was a thousand degrees outside and my makeup did not budge!

+1! Absolutely. I use it daily to keep my makeup looking flawless.
I think the most important thing to consider is your base, or primer. Immaculate Cosmetics makes an amazing Mineral Veil Primer which glides on your skin and keeps any type of makeup from budging for 12+ hours. I wear it every day and my friends are always teasing me that even after a work out my make up looks great.
I use the Bare Minerals Mineral Veil and the Urban Decay All Nighter finishing spray for important events. Again, these combined with the Immaculate Mineral Veil Primer is an amazing key to keeping things looking great all day.

I second @lilchicana: on using Monistat Chaffing Gel as a primer – I read about it on a makeup artist’s blog a few years ago, and it’s what I’ve been using ever since. Works great, and it’s waaaaaay cheaper than Smashbox (and is the exact same thing).
I also recommend finding a good finishing spray. I use Model in a Bottle (ordered from Amazon) any time I have a special event, or if it’s hot out and I want to make sure my makeup stays all day. It’s a lifesaver.

I’ve been weirded out by a ‘setting spray’ and have never bought the Urban Decay product despite it’s loyal following. I think I may do so now! I have long lashes, so my mascara often migrates to the area under my eyebrows.

Just a heads up, I use my setting spray before I apply my mascara, because if you spray it on with mascara on and your eyes closed, it tends to leave mascara underneath the eyes. So I’m not sure if a setting spray would help with your particular problem.

I have to check out the setting spray, I’ll be DIYing my makeup also!
