I wouldn’t do anything until you know why she isn’t texting you back. She may have had an emergency and is unable to use her phone. You’re jumping to conclusions right now.

lilceeja124 :  how long has it been with no response? If it’s been a few days do you know of any family that you can check in with to make sure she’s ok?

Where are you finding these people?  At this point it really seems like this is all on you.  Could you just be super unlucky and have two terrible employees back to back? Maybe, but perhaps you need to look at your strategy here. Are you going through a reputable agency?  Are you going for people who are experienced enough, wasn’t your previous nanny a kid basically?

It seems like maybe you aren’t paying enough to be able to recruit reliable and experience people for the job, this is your child, do you really want to rely on a 21 year old to care for him/her?

I’m not saying it falls on you or all parents if a nanny does anything bad but at this point this is two disastrous nannies back to back and perhaps you need to take action and have a look at the things that are in your control. Clearly finding a reputable nanny on Facebook isn’t working out for you so maybe it’s time to try something else and go to an agency that throughly vets the people on it’s books.

lilceeja124 :  Did you speak with the references or see other people post on facebook “oh I love Sally, she’s great!”?? It sucks when someone turns out to not be good, but I think after 2 duds from this facebook group it’s time to find a more reliable source of good childcare.

oh well then that’s definitely weird that it’s becoming a problem for a lot of local families. Are you paying a good wage? Do you have expectations beyond childcare that might be overwhelming for a young nanny? Perhaps a daycare would be a better fit for your family.

lilceeja124 :  So I think FB groups can be great for this (that’s how we found our nanny and we’ve had her for over a year now). But you can also find a lot of duds this way. It’s really really reeeeeally hit or miss. You said they both had references? Did you call and speak with these references? Did you do background checks?

Unfortunately in the nanny world I think things like this are fairly common. I am in a lot of mommy/nanny groups and you’d be surprised how many babysitters and/or nannys just don’t show up and you never hear from them again. It sort of reminds me of my time in the food service industry. Very unreliable with high turnover. So they’re constantly looking for something that will pay more money and the second they find something better, they’re out of there. Are you paying these nannys under-the-table? That might be part of the issue right there too. Have you considered going through an agency?

lilceeja124 :  I haven’t gone through an agency but we just got lucky and the first and only person we hired has worked out for over a year now. But I have friends and other moms on the mommy groups that have. One of my friends went through 4 nannys within a year! As I said, it’s all hit or miss. Seems you also got lucky with your first nanny and are now striking out trying to replace her. All you can really do is keep trying. I’ve heard from a few people that SitterCity is better than Care.com. But I’ve never used either of them.

lilceeja124 :  that definitely sounds like just bad luck then. I would go through agencies from now on – they’ll have weeded out the flakes for you. Do you know for sure other families in your area are paying under the table? If more families are properly paying them as employees the might be jumping ship for those jobs? Personally I would only work under the table if I were desperate and then ditch for an above the table job as soon as I could get one.
