Ha, this sounds like me and my husband. If I’d had it my way, we would have skipped the first dance, but he really, really wanted to do it, so I caved. We chose, “That’s how strong my love is” by Otis Redding. It’s a sincere, soulful, non-cheesey song that’s just over two minutes 🙂 It also has a  good rhythm so the traditional “hug ‘n sway” prom dance is easy to do with this song 🙂

Yeah, and also, you can always instruct the DJ to cut off any song that goes on longer than you’d like. Like, have them fade it out at a good stopping point. We used our MacBook as our DJ, and had the song pre-set with a very early fade-out in iTunes (I think we cut out about 10-15 extra seconds, so my estimate might be off).

Although I like the idea of a first dance, I don’t want to be out there having people stare at us dancing for too long either! So I feel your pain!  The song I think we decided on was “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson.  It just just over 2 minutes which I think is a great length and it is kinda funny, cute, and different.  Not too serious!

Also, you could always invite the bridal party to join in the dance half way through to take the spotlight off you guys!

you could have the dj announce that you would like people to join you. have your bridal party know in advance and after like 30 seconds open the floor up. then you can pick any song you like.

“Wonderful World” is a very sweet song and relatively short.
