My Fiance and I are struggling to decide if we are going to have a band or a DJ for our wedding. We were recently at a wedding and the band was so awesome and fun!! My father REALLY wants us to have a band as it gives a “classy” feel. I like the band because live music does have more energy but a DJ can play a wider variety of songs.
ANYWAYS… Question: We want our first dance song to be “You are the best thing” by Ray Lamontagne but if we had a band…
-Would they sing the song? (do bands usually sing the first song?)
-Would they just play the track? (has anyone had this?)
-Would we have to pick a different song that they can play?
Maybe this all depends on the band we suggest, but I’d still love to gather your hive knowledge and/or hear about your wedding band experiences!

I’m definitely going to follow your thread! I’ve booked a band for my wedding, I’m having the band sing our first dance “say you won’t let go” James Arthur, decisions decisions! Xx

Why not both?! I’m doing band for the reception and DJ for the ceremony 🙂

We had both.
The band did 45 minute sets and the DJ would come on during breaks. We were asked if we wanted them to perform our firt dance but I declined. Our lead singers were awesome but nobody could do it like the original…LOL

My brother and SIL had this song played by a band as their first dance song. It sounded great!

Thanks for that info! That is exactly what I was wondering!
My sister’s SO is a music producer and we were hoping for him to mix a signiture song for the dance right after our first dance to invite others to dance to (which a band obviously won’t be able to perform) so it’s good to know that this is an option.

We’re having a band but they won’t be playing our first dance – we’ll just be using an iPod to play that. The band did offer to learn the song we’re using for our first dance, but our dance teacher recommended using the exact same version that we’ve been practicising to. She said that she has seen bands play the song slightly differently to the recording, which has caused confusion and mistakes with the couple dancing. Instead, our band are learning the song we’ve picked for our joint father/daughter and mother/son dance – we aren’t learning any choreography for this, so there isn’t really much that can go wrong.
