I already have my dress, I purchased it from another bride and know I’ll be letting it out at the bust at least (I don’t think it needs to be let out anywhere else though). But isn’t 7 months before my wedding kinda soon for a first dress fitting? I don’t plan on recreating my body between now and the wedding, just losing a few pounds that could easily be disguised by spanx if I didn’t lose them in the end…
The fitting is the beginning of February and my wedding is mid-September.
I agreed to it because the seamstress I love a lot says she gets ultra busy quickly, and she wouldn’t mind starting work on my gown sooner.
Considering all those circumstances is it still too soon?

Most of the time, fittings are at 6 weeks, 4 weeks, and 2 weeks out from the wedding. Much earlier than 2 months and there’s really no point because a lot of the work may have to be redone.

I also have a secondhand dress, and I took it to the seamstress right away, even with 8+ months before the wedding. I wanted to make sure that it’d be possible to take in the dress with the beading, along with change the neckline to sweetheart. Since you’re having it taken out, it’d be good to at least make sure that your seamstress can do everything you want.
Also, I don’t think my body will change much (I’ve been within a 5-pound range for 5 years), so I decided I’d rather get all the big work done now, and maybe some small adjustments when it gets closer to the date. My seamstress said she’d thinks it’s a better idea to do the dress now, especially since she’ll get slammed with rush jobs as the months go by.
I recommend wearing your spanx to the fitting, and then as time goes by, you’ll have either lost the weight, or you can just wear the spanx under your dress.

Since you are planning on losing weight it might be OK to wait a bit for your first fitting.
I purchased my dress in Aug. 2012, had my first fitting Nov, 2012, second fitting Dec. 2012, and my final fitting is tonight. My wedding isn’t until this Sept. However, I live 3 hrs from my alteration’s lady. I’m a full time student, work part time, and I am involved heavily in my community. I knew I would never have enough time to go dress shopping with my mom and sister unless it was in the summer last year. I also can’t take the time off to go up and have alterations done this summer since I will be a head coordinator at my work. Timing was an issue but I’ve been the same size for over two years so it works well for my own schedule.
