What finger food did you/will you start with for older babies? We’d like to encourage Addie to feed herself, but we’re kinda blanking on foods she can safely eat (i.e. that aren’t a choking hazard). So far we’ve tried:
- Baby Mum Mums
- plain rice cakes
Any more recs?

how old is she?
My daughter loved little pieces of bananas

@cyndistar3: Almost 9 months. And bananas are her favorite! Good idea.
@Neva: Ah, I forgot about that!

My daughter also loves frozen peas. they are great for teething and they are so small that she can’t really choke on them. Spaghetti is also pretty good for starters.

My girlfriend fed her wee one bites of avocado – which he quite enjoyed 🙂
And what if you boiled/steamed baby carrots until they were quite soft and gave her one to gnaw on once they cooled off?

She loves all these things, but I worry that she won’t be able to gum the food enough before swallowing it, and she’ll choke. Is this unreasonable? All of what we’ve given her so far has been pureed/mashed or dissolves easily.

@Mrs. Spring: at nine months it shouldn’t be that big of an issue. You have to start somewhere, just start with little pieces (big enough for her to pick up though)

I think it is reasonable to worry about her choking but my little man is 7 months old and he is already gumming food very well. He will however still make a little gagging sound sometimes when he gets a new texture.
Just watch her and if she makes a gagging sound do the finger sweep and take it out.
Our little man is already eating the potatoes and carrots from our pot roast, bananas, sweet potatoes, and avocados.
Good luck I’m sure she will do great!
