Some women say it hurts when they get checked but for me it just felt like a bit of pressure.  You can decline to get checked if it’s making you worried though.  The swab was no biggy at all, they just barely touch you, it’s more of the thought that’s icky.

@troubled:  Ditto for me.  I don’t think internals hurt, but if you’re worried, you can always decline it.  My doctor always asks if I want a check, and I always say yes because I want to know!  🙂  But lots of people decline them at this point in pregnancy.

What exactly does internal exam mean? I am having a Group B strep swab test done next week. does that count as internal? I’ll be 36 weeks. I dont want her to check my cervix but we’ll see how it goes. I’m nervous and dont like any type of pelvic exams. I had my last one when I was 6 weeks.

I had 3 checks- 36 weeks, 38 weeks, and 39 weeks. The first and last were done my regular OB, and she was out of the office during my 38 week so I had a different doctor. She was not at all gentle- to quote Vince Vaughn in wedding crashers- I felt like Jodie Foster in The Accused. I actually teared up a little.

The checks with my regular doctor were not pleasant, but not traumatizing either. And no matter what- it’s over with quick.

ETA: As far as the Q tip goes, it’s super fast. You probably won’t even feel it.

Some doctors do both vaginal and rectal swabs for the group B test and some only do vaginal. So bum  q tips may or may not happen depending on your doctor. I was actually about to start a post to find out how many people had their butts swabbed as well

@ieatunicorns:  Lol! good point! I would probably pick a really innocent title like “Group B test” just to trick people into thinking it was safe to read my post lol

wowowowow…. bum swabs? geez louise. If it’s any consolation, I know it’s gross but I had my “bum swabbed” early in pregnancy when I went to the ER because I had blood in my stool. I didn’t even really feel it it was so fast!

Question: Is this internal exam any different than a regular pap smear? I mean, more uncomfortable/more invasive?
