I went to a hair trial and asked for a soft, bridal bohemian look and ended up with this mess. The store owner saw it and praised the stylist for how beautiful it was. It was like I’d fallen into the twilight zone. Worst hair experience ever and still wanted $150 for it.

As a MUA I’m horrified for you ladies.  Now I’m nowhere near perfect or a top notch artist, but I would never leave a customer unhappy. I’m sorry this happened to you all.

I am a cosmetologist, studying to be a lawyer atm, lol, but a cosmetologist all the same. I feel like some makeup artists are afraid to hurt their client or be too personal, so they end up making mistakes that more experienced artists wouldn’t. Quite simply, YOU HAVE TO BE INVASIVE. To do a perfect winged liner on someone, you have to most of the time, balance your hand on their face, while holding their eyelid somewhat taut to make sure it goes on smoothly. And you must use liquid liner for a crisp wing. I’m horrified at the job done for you ladies omg.

Omg my first makeup trial was awful. I kept telling her I didn’t want a smoky eye look (I prefer brighter lids, neutral colors), and she goes in with super dark browns and black eyeliner. She put fake lashes on me that starting coming away from my real lashes after 2 hours, and the eyeliner application was awful – I like REALLY thin eyeliner and didn’t want a cat eye (which I told her), and it was so thick and gross. Ugh.

The silicon-based airbrush foundation she used on my skin matched, but started to break apart once my oils started coming through, so I looked like an awful mess at the end of the day.

I went back for another makeup trial, was better able to communicate what I did and didn’t want, and it was great. We switched to a water-based airbrush, which stayed put all day, my eye makeup was way more natural, and my look was more “me, but better”. She did even better on my wedding day.

But gosh, that first trial. What a waste of $65.

mrssjwilliams:  omg. What a dramatic transformation. Props to you for keeping the humor. Fwiw, I agree that your trial was extremely awful – but you did an amazing job yourself!

emmmmru:  aaaand I just saw your updated photo. Yup. That’s some skin between your eyeliner and your…other eyeliner? On the bright side, you’re beautiful, and I’m sure almost anyone else would do a great job.

viridianx:  This thread is gold. I can’t believe that happened to you. I hope you didn’t end up paying?

stephncollins:  another example of absolutely beautiful day-of makeup, and an absolutely WTF trial.

viridianx:  Oh my heavens. That is truly awful. Did you get a refund?

emmmmru:  With the second picture, I can see what you’re talking about. There’s definitely a gap in your eyeliner. The lip color she went with looks lovely though, it darkens your lips just enough that they’ll look wonderful in pictures.

I had a horrible makeup / hair trial experience. I asked for a subtle burgundy lip, a mature warm brown smoky eye, and some mild contouring – and I also brought in inspiration photos. Well, I paid $150 and I looked nothing like the photos or how I described the look:

^Me laughing, because what else can you do when you look like that?

viridianx:  OMG, my face when I saw your pic –>…5 seconds later..still like this –>

How insane! I really hope you told them to take their $150 bill and shove it somewhere not so nice.

This is funny, I’m actually a MUA/hairstylist for weddings and I’ve heard some horrible storis my clients tell me From their previous MUA… And I’m surprise they even let them leave their chair looking like that….

emmmmru:  This was my wedding day look. We went with a different salon (I was actually totally okay with doing my own makeup and hair, but I had two bridesmaids who didn’t know how to do event looks and were really scared to do it themselves, so we went ahead and hired someone). The finished look was okay. This picture doesn’t show it, but my hair was too curly and it made me look quite young. The lipstick was also too pink. However, I didn’t have time to fix it because I DIY-ed my wedding and had to run the show! I found myself just being very “whatever” about it in the end.

Sadly, no refund but a good lesson not to pay up front and to trust my gut. The only people in the salon were me, my stylist and the owner who was working on another customer. All three of them kept saying how pretty it was and at first I thought maybe I wasn’t seeing right without my glasses. Of course, it was even worse when I put them on haha. Then I had to walk home through the city with it!
