Ok so I am having my first pap smear done tomorrow and I’m incredibly nervous. I know I know I should have had one before now but I haven’t head health insurance because my job didn’t offer it and now I finally have good health insurance. I am also a virgin. I’m incredibly nervous. How uncomfortable is it? Does it hurt? Ugh I’m dreading it!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much fellow bees!

It’s a little uncomfortable but doesn’t hurt per se. I promise it’s not as bad as it seems! I had my first one last year under pretty scary circumstances (new doctor, unidentified health problems), and it wasn’t bad at all.

Do not worry. You’ll be out of there before you know it! It can be uncomfortable (apparently I have an awkward cervix…!!) but most people experience no pain at all. Honestly it’s really nothing to worry about 🙂

I felt the same way before my first pap smear, as I was also a virgin. It’s really not that bad! Tell your doctor beforehand about your concerns. I had a great nurse practitioner who did my first pap smear, and she used the smallest speculum possible, talked about each step before she did it, and was overall extremely patient and compassionate.
I tend to live by the motto that forewarned is forearmed, so be prepared for the various components of the exam. Your doctor may include a breast exam and/or a pelvic exam using his/her fingers in addition to the use of the speculum. Ask beforehand if you have any questions as to how the exam will proceed!
Oh, and here’s my best advice possible: wiggle your toes! I saw an awesome OB/GYN for several years before moving, and he would always tell me to wiggle my toes before inserting my IUD or performing any exams with the speculum. For some reason, wiggling your toes helps loosen up those potentially tight muscles and make exams more comfortable. Plus it makes your mind focus on something else instead of feeling nervous.
Hang in there, OP! It will be over in no time!

It’s uncomforable but doesn’t hurt. And it’s quick!

Honestly it is nothing to be worried about. It doesn’t hurt and is only mildly uncomfortable, and I am pretty sure that I had my first one before I lost my virginity too. It only lasts few minutes. You will be fine bee!

It honestly does not hurt! Do not stress about it, it’ll be over before you know it.

I was nervous too but it will be ok! As everyone has said, for me its not painful just a bit uncomfortable and it’s very quick.

At its worst it feels like a mild menstrual cramp for a second or two. No biggie.
ETA: at its worst meaning the most “painful” one I’ve ever had done. And I’ve had several after having an abnormal result once. Usually it feels like a qtip being rubbed against your insides.

It’s absolutely fine. Weirdly I have found my male dr’s to be far more better at it than my female dr’s. At worst it is like a menstrual cramp. If anything it’s just a bit like uch…

It’s like nothing, don’t be afraid. It doesn’t even register on my painometer.

I was terrified for my first one too. Tell your doctor and they will walk you through the process and explain everything they’re doing. I’m always shocked by how quick my yearly check ups are. There isn’t pain, but a slight twinge of discomfort for a second and then it’s over. Just as a forewarning, I occasionally will have mild cramps the rest of the day and some light spotting. It’s nothing major though. Just take some ibuprofen and it’s no big deal.

I hated Pap smears for years until I figured out that using yoga breathing techniques really helped. Take a deep breath in before the doctor inserts the speculum and breath out using your mouth and focus on relaxing the muscles in your lower abdomen when they insert. If you ask they’ll use the smallest speculum and it won’t feel much larger than a tampon. The swabbing might feel a little weird but won’t hurt and lasts 2 seconds. You’ve got this!

It’s no worse than the dentist

I got my first one when I was a virgin too (I was only 14 there’s a super long dumb story about it – wasn’t necessary in the long run). It hurt like HELL. But only for a second. I would compare it to getting your ears pierced, without the burning and cleaning solution afterwards XD If I could do it differently I would have just asked him to warn me when he was doing it.
Cuz I had no warning and that sucked lol
