sarathemermaid : My partner and I moved into a house from our small 900 sq. foot apartment, so I totally feel you. We decided to get a townhome so it wasn’t too overwhelming for a first house. We basically put everything we had from the apartment into our guest room, and bought new furniture for the rest of the house. It was a lot of stuff, so we made a budget and a ton of lists before we moved in. But it was totally worth the effort (and money) to see our house fill up the way we wanted it to. We did everything in just a couple shopping planned shopping trips, so the whole process of furnishing only took like 1-2 weeks. We were pretty antsy to get everything settled quickly. It’s really up to you how you want to approach it though, so if you’re overwhelmed just relax for a few months and get the feel of how you want things to be. Just make a lot of lists, a budget, explore different options, and HAVE FUN!! Congrats on your new home 🙂

When my husband and I moved in together, we moved into a fully furnished 2 bedroom condo, so we got rid of basically all our furniture except my husband’s old ass fake leather couch (which he thought was real leather until my cats destroyed it and it was obviously fake), and my dining room table that I stored at my parents. A year later we bought a 4400 square foot house, haha. We legitimately just had a bed that we bought right before we moved in, the dining room table, and the ratty couch 🙂
We are both super busy lawyers, so let’s just say the house stayed that way way longer than it should have. Then I got pregnant and we were both like, holy crap, we need to furnish now or we never will.
My advice is just prioritize what rooms and furniture types matter. E.G., we need our own bed, and living room furniture and the spare bedrooms can wait.
And enjoy it! It’s fun to design the interior of your new home!
