This is our first month TTC and I could use some of your expert advice! I stopped the BCP this month after about 15 years of continuous use and I had had very regular cycles while on the pill. We decided not to temp/use opks and to try to BD EOD on month 1 and just see what happens. Unsurprisingly, I’m now utterly confused. Here’s what I do know:
- CD 1/withdrawal bleed on Aug 25th
- Felt some cramping on CDs 13/14 so I thought I was ovulating
- Lower back ache/PMS-like cramps on CDs 17-22 (wth? so random)
- BFN both yesterday and today (CDs 25/26)
Today (CD 26), I’m back to having PMS symptoms and as mentioned above, I used a Wondfo HPT (with FMU) and got a BFN this morning. At this point, I’m assuming AF is on her way. But wait! To confuse myself more, I wanted to try out a Wondfo OPK because they just arrived in the mail for next month. So I used one and it looks to be positive – the 2 lines look like the same color. I am so confused. Could this be a pre-AF LH surge? Am I actually ovulating now? From my (admittedly amateur) research, it seems like ovulation cramps are more like a pinching feeling rather than the typical PMS lower backache and menstrual cramps I have now and get every month (and strangely got mid-month this cycle)?
I think maybe my hormones are just going a little crazy after quitting the pill and I know ultimately I just have to wait until AF shows to start getting a better idea of what’s going on with my cycle but if anyone has some insight, I’d greatly appreciate it. I’m guessing we should just continue BDing just in case I am ovulating now? Thanks!!

My guess would be that your body is regulating after coming off the pill. Keep BD’ing for good measure!

Honestly I think you’re pulling a double whammy on your hormones by TTC the very same month you go off BCP’s. Nothing wrong with doing that, BUT I think the result is you’re going to have to sit back and let your body do its thing and just wait for AF for a few weeks. TTC tends to make people’s cycles go haywire as does going off BCP, so its extremely hard to predict what exactly is going on. I think you just have to wait it out. There really is no such thing as having perfect cycles on BCP, because you’re not actually having a natural cycle and the pill is regulating everything, not your body. Just keep doing your thing, stay healthy, BD, and let your body catch up.
Oh and using an OPK at this point in your cycle is likely to just confuse you, since you have no idea what was going on in the previous couple of weeks. This really could be when you’re ovulating or it could just be a hormone surge post-ovulation. I would definitely BD just in case though!

For what its worth, I was convinced my period was coming when I was pregnant with my son. I felt totally PMSy. I even told DH that it was going to come the next day on the Sunday night (we were a week out from our wedding and I was annoyed it was going to stick around for the wedding.) Nope. Pregnant. It felt exactly like PMS.
Also, an OPK can show a BFP (apparently they aren’t sophisicated enough to tell the difference between the 2 hormones.) But, an at home pregnancy test should show it at the same time. You could just be ovulating late as you come off the pill and your cycle settles down.

After coming off BCP I didn’t ovulate until CD27/28 for the three months I was trying before getting my BFP. I’d suggest your hormones are still regulating so keep up with the BD EOD until your period arrives.
If you don’t want to temp then buying some cheap OPKs to use all of next month might keep you more in the picture – although I should add that the month I got my BFP I had three lots of positive OPKs throughout the month until I finally ovulated (confirmed by temps) on CD27. OPKs are not necessarily fool proof. The only way to really know what is going on is to temp unfortunately.
You should also be aware that you don’t have ‘real’ periods on BCP – your bleed is artificially induced every month when you have your 7 day break due to drop in hormones hence why they would have seemed regular.

Thanks for the advice, Bees! AF finally showed up this morning, finishing off my first cycle at a lovely 42 days. Very glad she showed, waiting is no fun (I know, preaching to the choir)! I’m planning on attempting to temp and using OPKs for this next cycle as I have noooo clue when I’ll be ovulating. FX the next cycle is 42 days or less but trying not to get my hopes up!
