Just curious if anyone else here lost weight during the first trimester? I’m a competitive athlete and had a bit of trouble initially getting my period back since my body fat is low and I Weight train a lot and workout for 1-2 hours/ day…since finding out I was pregnant I cut alcohol (I was previously drinking 1-2 bottles of red wine a week). I have also taken the opportunity to cut all my other bad habits (DIET SODA). I spoke to my doctor and she said it’s normal and I can continue to keep up with my workout intensity….. but I just find it crazy. I’m down 4 pounds at 7 weeks Preggo, which is a lot on my small frame and it makes me nervous!! it also makes me feel like I drank like a fish before lol. I should mention – I am not trying to lose weight.

Yup- I dropped almost 15 lbs pretty early in my pregnancy. Granted, I needed to lose about 15 lbs, but I wasn’t hugely overweight or anything- like, there was a very noticeable difference. It was due in part to no longer drinking (I had similar habits to you, I think…a few glasses of wine or beer throughout the week, but it adds up), I started eating very well and then when the nausea kicked in, I was eating the minimum. I’m also pretty short (just over 5’3).
I also gained weight super slowly- I was only up about 5 lbs by around 16 weeks, added another 5 lbs by 20 weeks and then another 5 at my last appointment around 25 weeks, which brought me to my pre-pregnancy weight. I was concerned I wasn’t gaining enough but my doctor said for some women, it just all goes to the baby and you don’t really gain all over. My eating habits aren’t as great as they were when I first got pregnant (seriously- eat all the veggies now while you can!!!) because I just can’t handle certain foods anymore, but while I definitely indulge in sweets I still try to be mindful of what I’m eating.
I wouldn’t worry about it- it seems pretty normal and they will monitor you and your baby to make sure he or she is growing correctly. Everything you eat goes to the baby first, so as long as you’re eating, your baby is getting what they need. Just make sure you take your prenatal!

I have with my first pregnancy as well as with this one. Mine is mostly nausea related though. First time around I lost a total of 20lbs and didn’t start gaining back until the very end of the second tri. I’m currently 14w and lost a total of 10lbs so far. I’m trying my best to eat healthy and get as much in my system but the weight keeps coming off. Dr doesn’t seem too concerned just because I’ve been through this before and had a healthy pregnancy and baby. I’m sure the same will happen with you. At some point you’ll start gaining. Happy and healthy 9 months to you!

I lost weight in the first trimester with both of my pregnancies. Only a few pounds like you and the doctor didn’t seemed concerned. From what I’ve learned you really aren’t supposed to gain much of anything in the first tri.

KB87 : I didn’t lose weight, but I didn’t gain anything either. I was also extremely active before and during my pregnancy and underweight (5’6 and 116 lb). All of that said, my doctor wasn’t concerned and encouraged me to continue staying healthy which I did. I definitely dropped the intensity but continued to run 5-6 times a week up until about 36 weeks. I started gaining weight consistently maybe halfway through the second trimester and was 139 lb when I gave birth. So, I gained a lot at the end. If your doctor isn’t concerned then you shouldn’t be either. Honestly, a lot of people don’t gain during the first trimester and many lose weight due to nausea.

KB87 : I’m nearly 13 weeks and only up about 3 pounds. I do not really workout much (I walk alot but thats it), but I have been trying to beef up my eating a little and still I’m the same when I go to weigh every morning. We were really bad this week & I had a ton of processed foods & sugars (donuts, cinnamon rolls, ice cream, pumpkin bread…damn those cravings- I usually hate sweet stuff!) and still nothing. I think it does have alot to do with cutting out alcohol- I used to drink quite a bit before we suspected I was pregnant & thats alot of extra calories… I wake up hungry every single morning no matter what or how much I ate the night before so I’m just assuming it’s all going straight to the baybay =) My dr is not concerned about it but they are pretty laid back- their motto is that your body will do what it needs & they are just there to help you through it.

KB87 : totally normal I did it as well. Between cutting out the booze and only craving veggies I lost a decent amount of body fat while pregnant.
