So at my first u/s tomorrow, I will be 6 or 7 weeks. Should I expect a transvaginal or abdominal u/s? I’m really worried about a transvaginal because I’ve had quite severe cramping and I’m afraid the u/s will start kick start awful cramps just like b/ding does. Any advice? Should I expect to hear baby’s heartbeat?

Most likely it will be vaginal. I had my first ultrasound at estimated 7w3d and she popped it on my abdomen and said it was too small she would have to go transvaginal. I was actually only 6w3d. I have been having cramps and pulling tho nothing severe… my only advice would be to remain calm throughout the u/s so you dont tense and create cramps. perhaps bring tylenol if you have to return to work. you should be able to see the heartbeat, but its vary unlikely you will hear it. as far as i know you cant hear it til about 10+ weeks on the doppler. GL!

My first ultrasound at 6weeks 5days was just abdominal, and I was able to see the heartbeat flicker, but they weren’t able to measure it yet since it was so small (though they tried having me hold my breath and be really still!)
Also, not sure how your office will do it, but at mine, the ultrasound tech does all the measurements, etc with the screen faced away, and then will turn it to me and let me see once everything is done – I didn’t know that is how they did it, and so I was REALLY worried during my first US, thinking that they weren’t able to find the baby or something.

@idaho1745: My u/s at 7 weeks and 10 weeks were both done transvaginal. I didn’t have any cramping. But I’d just let the tech know. I heard the heart beat at 10 weeks with the u/s; they turned on the sound. I can’t remember if I heard it or just saw it at 7 weeks. I got to watch the screen the entire time, though.

It will be transvag. Have a full bladder!
At 6w4d we were able to see and hear the heartbeat…all beautiful 124 bpm!
So excited for you.

@idaho1745: it’s going to be a vaginal ultrasound. You should see the sac and hopefully a little blueberry in there (: and you should get to hear the heartbeat as well which is really awesome!

I had my first u/s at 7w5. They started with tha abdominal one and required a full bladder. we were able to see the baby and heartbeat but they do the Transvag one right after for more measurements. I think if they didn’t tell you to come with a full bladder you will likely be doing Transvag only. Good luck, it is only a few mins and it will take your breath away seeing that little heart beating!!

I had my first at 6w4d or so and it was abdominal first but they couldn’t see anything, and then transvaginal but they had warned me that it would be. Got to see and hear the heartbeat too. The transvag didn’t hurt me at all but my SIL told me beforehand that hers really hurt her? Just relax and you should be fine. Mine was way less uncomfortable than a pap.

Depends your doc. Mine at 7w3d was abdominal.

@MrsMaskatoBe: empty bladder for transvaginal. Full bladder for abdominal. God, that was so uncomfortable!

@mamadingdong: oh that’s probably right. She tried abdominal first and couldn’t see anything, so she had me empty.

Mine at 7 weeks was transvaginal. I was kinda nervous about it, but honestly it wasn’t bad at all. Like a PP said, it’s easier than a pap. You should be able to see the heartbeat too! Trust me, you won’t even care about what’s going on-it’s just such a relief to see that things are OK 🙂

Thank you to all of you ladies! I guess I’ll just see what happens in a few hours! Thanks for the encouragement! 🙂

The last time I went (with my BO) they started on the abdomen, but couldn’t see anything so they switched to vaginal. My first U/S this time around I’ll be 8w1d so I’m not sure what they’ll do.

Most likely transvaginal, which I have never found to hurt at all.
You might hear the heartbeat, but don’t be upset if you don’t — it’s completely normal not to hear it for another couple weeks yet.
