We’re getting married in a few months so I’m kinda running out of time with this!
I have a very very Italian name (sing-songy with a lot of vowels), and my FI’s name is very blunt (like Michael Smith, for example). I really do want to take my FI’s last name (for many reasons) but even he admits that it would sound totally strange with my first and middles names and doesn’t fit at all. I’ve thought about hyphenating the two, but that would make my new last name five syllables, which is quite a mouthful. I like how the hyphenated name looks on paper (or on ID) but I don’t like how it sounds when people say “Mrs.____ – _____” to me. And I want to have my FI’s last name, but it sounds very strange with my first name.
Should I just suck it up and try to get used to my first name with his last name when people address me? Or does anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks 🙂

You could create a new last name just for the two of you, change/shorten your first name, or he could take your last name. That is all I can think of sorry.

Not knowing what these names actually are, it’s hard to give an opinion. If you don’t like his last name with yours, don’t change it. Keep your maiden name. Plenty of people do it. You don’t need to hyphen it.
That said, I think a longer first name with a shorter last name but be nice. My beef with mine is that my first name ends with an N and his last name begins with an N. So if you’re not careful, it kinda sounds like one name. But it’s not enough to bother me. But if it really bothers you, don’t change it!
Besides, they don’t have to “fit”. That’s part of getting married. If you’re married, people will know that it is because you got married, not because your parents thought those names sounded good together.

hahah. I am in the same boat!!! FI’s name is the name you mentioned hahahahaha. My first name is obviously Gabrielle and my middle name is very exotic.
You could always combine the two. We had a professor in college who used her maiden name “Linder” with her husbands last name “Barry” and she changed their last name to Lindey. I thought that was really neat.
You don’t even have to change it at all!

You could not change it, both change, or you come up with a new one by yourself (which would just be weird I have to admit, if only you changed your name)
