Running is a great option, the elliptial is good too..but have it on a higher resistance or do a good cardio or fat burning program on it. I would combine that with low weights and exersize ball or even a resistance band. Do alittle of everything to keep you body guessing. Sometimes i do elliptical for an hour, or run for 30 mins and do light weights for 30. Sometimes yoga, or see if your gym has any aerobics classes (i love jazzersize lol). Does it have a pool? Swimming lengths is a good one to throw in once a week or so.

I get bored easy, so I like to change it up and keep it fun!

I just talked to my strength trainer about this last week, as I have similar goals as you. She said it literally makes no difference and that weight loss is all about calories in/calories out and calorie burning is all about your heart rate. So she told me to pick whatever I want, eliptical, treadmill, step mill, bike, whatever, and do intervals. Like, just pick the interval option on the machine and go for it for an hour or whatever. She said 1:1 is good or 2:1 rigor:rest.

Does this make sense?

I worked out on the treadmill and elliptical for equal amounts of time, doing intervals on both and I burned almost 40 more calories on the elliptical than on the treadmill. My trainer told me the elliptical was her favorite cardio machine, but please make sure to your weight training, it’s SO important! After I started incorporating weight training twice weekly with my cardio I lost 25 lbs…it’s totally worth it. Also I do a mixture of the bands, ball & machines. Good luck!!!

I also noticed I burn more on the elliptical than running on the treadmill. What’s up with that?? :-/

@andilene:  Damn! How much cardio were you doing? I do weights three times a week and cardio maybe two or three times? I just think in general I’m not doing enough.

Oh. I also eat too much.

I am no expert but my experience with hitting the gym lately is that I burn more calories on the ellipctical and step mill and within a shorter distance.

I do 20 min on 10.0 incline and at 3.5- 4.0 and burn 200 + calories and distance is more than a mile.

Then go on to weights for my arms and legs.

Follow it up by some ab machines

Then to the step mill or elliptical for a intense 10 mins.

I go to the gym now every morning and sometimes 2x a day, I am determined to get this weight off!

Interval training is key. The reason you’re not burning as many calories on the treadmill is because most people pick one speed and stick to it. Ellipticals burn a lot of calories because you’re often moving at different speeds and paces, and some let you move the incline up and down.

So…I recreate this on the treadmill with muscle confusion. I run 5 minute intervals, and each “level” I run at lasts for 1 minute. It’s hard to explain so I’ll write it out below…

           Minute one: 6mph

           Minute two: 6.5mph

           Minute three: 7pmh

           Minute four: 7.5mph

           Minute five: 8mph

After five minutes, you can take a breather (because it’s hard!) or go back to 6pmh and start over. You can add in more “fun” by increasing the incline ๐Ÿ™‚

Another treadmill workout I also like to do is sprint as fast as possible for one minute, then take 2-3 minutes off catching my breath. So you would sprint at 10mph (or 9, or 8, whatever you feel is your “fastest” that you can continue for 1 minute) for one minute, then slow down to 3mph and walk for two to three minutes to slow down your heart rate, then repeat. I’ve heard that 5-7 repetitions/cycles is the best.

I hope I didn’t confuse you all…they’re great workouts that really challenge you and burn a crazy amount of calories! When I’m done I’m literally dripping in sweat!

If you want to work up to running, the couch25k program is pretty awesome. If you have a smartphone you can just download an app for it and it will give you verbal cues for when to walk and when to jog. It’s seriously made me love running again.

Spinning! When you find a good class, it is the best cardio workout!

Also, like others have said, weight loss really is 90% diet – or rather, eating the right way. Sticking to weight watchers is a good way to do that!

I was given this from my PT for my cardio before doing weight training. If you want all of my exercises (everything we did during my sessions)I got from her, PM me with your email and I will send them to you ๐Ÿ˜€

Also, my PT told me to NEVER do the elliptical or treadmil for over an hour if weight loss is your goal because after an hour you are wasting your energy….
