Hey bees! I need some opinions & advice. Sorry this is so long, I wanted to provide as much info as possible. TLDR at the end.
I have an acquaintance that I met through a former job. We were very friendly when we worked together, chatted often, went for lunch somewhat regularly. She’s a kind of mother goose crossed with a “don’t f*ck with me” rough around the edges type of lady. She’s also been known to elaborate a story or outright lie sometimes. Neither of us work for that company anymore, but we remained Facebook friends and comment on each other’s posts from time to time.
She used to own a florist shop and now does floral work on the side. I messaged her to ask advice about flowers and she (so generously) offered to do all our wedding flowers at her cost. AMAZING! She was estimating about $600 for all centerpieces, bouquets, boutonnieres, rose petals for the aisle, an arrangement for the welcome sign and flowers for the cake. She even offered to arrange the artificial flowers we’d already purchased for our ceremony arch. I’d offered to pay her for her time several times, but she refused to even discuss it.
We made plans to meet up after a dress appointment but I ran 30 mins late and it wasn’t good timing for her anymore. So we rescheduled for the next day. I messaged, I called, no answer. She messaged me in the evening stating that her fridge died and she had to run out and get a new one. The next time I was in town, we got together & went over everything. She told me all about her new kitchen renovation & that she had to get a new fridge because the old one didn’t fit nicely anymore (guess she forgot that she told me a different story! I didn’t call her on that) She wrote lots of notes, said she’d be ordering really soon to beat summer weddings and get a better deal. She had me send her $300 as a deposit and said she’d send a receipt and invoice detailing everything, as well as a bunch of pics when she was ordering.
I texted her a couple weeks later to ask if she’d sent the reciept and invoice & to clarify my email address. She said she did but she’d resend it. Nothing. I sent her a text with a link to submit her info for the wedding guest list & she responded immediately to that. She texted a few days later to see if I’d got her email, I didn’t so I resent my email address. I waited another couple of weeks and messaged again, this time on Facebook so I could see if she got it. She read it but never replied. I messaged again a week later (6 weeks after sending her my deposit) and asked if she was still able to do this and that I wouldn’t be upset if she needed to back out but that I needed to know by June 1st so I could make other plans. If I didn’t hear from her, I would assume she has changed her mind & we could make arrangements for a refund. She replied right away stating that her mom has a stroke & broke her hip so she had been super stressed & to resend my email address. I replied that I was so sorry that had happened and asked if she was OK. Her response was “email please”. I have a sneaking suspicion that she’s lying, I won’t accuse her because I could be wrong, but she’s been known to tell some pretty outrageous lies in order to get out of stuff before. She immediately emailed me a typed out “Receipt for wedding deposit, $$$ paid by etransfer, remainder due 2 weeks before wedding date”. She has a legit floral business, so I was expecting something a little more official, but whatever. She didn’t include an invoice or anything detailing what we’d discussed at our meeting. I’d asked several times about when she would be ordering and if she wanted to me to be available to OK stuff (as she’s said previously) but she just ignored that question.
I’m worried that something will “come up” and she’ll bail on our wedding. I have read some really lovely reviews about her, but there was one a couple of years ago where she said she dropped off a bride’s flowers at the hotel but they never made it to the reception hall. She blamed the hotel for losing them but when the hotel reviewed the security footage, she was never there. It makes me SO nervous. The flowers are our main décor. The reception and ceremony spaces will look empty without them. She agreed to have everything ready for pickup on Thursday before the wedding so if she bails, I’ll have 1 day to scramble but I feel like I’m going to worry about this for the next 6 months! Fiance thinks we should call her and get her to commit to a date that she’ll have the flowers ordered and if she misses that date, we’ll ask for our money back. I’m open to this, but every time I call her, she doesnt answer and just messages me instead. I also prefer messaging because then I have everything in writting.
I feel like I’m walking on eggshells when I message her because I’m worried she’ll get fed up and ghost me. Am I being too overbearing? Am I stressing for nothing? Should I fire her and hire someone else? A friend of a friend florist is going to send me a quote this week, so I’m going to wait and see what that comes in at before I do anything but if I do decide to fire her, how would I go about that?!
TLDR: Acquaintance offered to do all wedding flowers at her cost. Is being flaky and not responding to questions. Already sent a deposit but very worried she’ll flake on our wedding day and considering firing her.
Thanks in adance!
