I live in Florida in the Hollywood/Ft. Lauderdale area. I moved to Florida when I was 6 and we originally settled into Kendall (Miami). After about 4 years there my family relocated to Hollywood. I live in the same area I grew up, just now with my husband in an apartment. The entire Boca Raton area is very expensive. My grandmother has lived there my entire life, and I used to consider her extremely wealthy. Now what she has compared to what the new Boca crowd has is not even close to wealthy. My husband and I searched for some apartments when we were getting married, and the best priced place got us a really sketchy apartment complex and a tiny apartment, so we decided to just stay in Hollywood. Are the areas you’re looking for part of an assocation or on country club land? I know that my grandmother does not pay dues to a country club and she lives in a single family home.

Have you really looked all over Boca? I know that since living in Florida I have always lived in a community with an HOA, but not necessarily with the outrageous golf/country club fees that you’ve found. I know that my husband used to live in an area of Boca called Montoya Circle, which is basically a huge circle with different developments on it, and some are beautiful and large and some are modest and more moderately priced (his family lived in the latter). I think you should keep looking for a home and not get discouraged. There are plenty of homes down here that are not attached to an HOA, or are, but not on a golf/country club. My husband and I live on a golf course actually but as we are not the owners of the apartment I do not know if the landlord pays country club fees. I have to tell you that I assume she doesn’t though just because of what I know about the community. My grandmother lives on a street right off of Clint Moore Rd. in Boca and she is definitely not on a golf course or near a country club. I know her home is in a very small little housing niche right next to the Calusa Elementary School. That may be a nice area to look into.

@MrsCarnival:  Oh yes! Down here it’s a lot of gated communities! However, the two communities (well, really three, but the other I only lived there for two years) were not gated, but did have an HOA.. but being not gated the cost is a lot less. My grandmother also lives in a community that isn’t gated up in Boca. I think you will definitely be able to find what you are looking for down here you just have to be patient. The Emerald Hills area in Hollywood is beautiful, by the way, if you really wanted to expand your search, and there are MANY properties down here that are not in a gated community at all! I know they have them up in the Boca area you just have to be patient with your search. Boca has a lot more gated communities than probably any other area except West Palm Beach. Good luck with your search and let me know if you have any questions about anything down here!

Check the South Florida board; it includes Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and Boca.  Central Florida is mostly the Orlando/Tampa/Cocoa Beach/Melbourne area.
