Ok, first of all, I completely sympathize. I was totally at sea about flowers!

Here’s what we did. I made appointments with three different florists to just talk to them. I was a difficult customer – I have no “colors,” I didn’t know what kind of flowers I wanted, I didn’t know how many arrangements we’d need, and I didn’t even know if I wanted a bouquet!  But my mom and met with them, I explained what my home wedding is going to be like, what my dress is going to be like, what arrangements I KNEW we needed, and which ones I wasn’t sure about.  They put together quotes, either that day or within the week, that had a pretty big range depending on how many elements we ordered and what kinds of flowers we picked.

I liked the first two a lot; I did not like the 3rd. So he was crossed off.  I looked at the contract for the first one and it seemed unnecessarily harsh – it’s hard to explain, but it just didn’t give me a good vibe.  We’d set up another meeting with the 2nd florist we met, and I just really liked him. He suggested a bouquet that I never would have thought of but that suits me perfectly, his prices were reasonable, he’s been in business for decades, and he’s 5 minutes from where the wedding will be.  So we put down a deposit. He’s going to come look at the venue (my mom’s house) after Valentine’s day and then make some more suggestions.

I haven’t had the wedding yet, obviously, but I think he’ll be really great to work with. I hope this is helpful! Oh, one thing – it really does help going in if you have a price range or even firm upper limit in mind.

My wedding was in October 2010 and we had our first meeting with the florist at the end of January 2010.  And then only once or twice after that.

We booked our florist early on (last May or June). This florist meets with us three times before the wedding and also does centerpiece mock ups each time(for free) until we nail down the right designs and flowers. We are doing our final meeting and mock up next weekend (Jan 29th four months before the wedding). At this meeting she will take pictures of the design we selected so we are garunteed to get exactly what we want on our wedding day, and there will be no surprises.

Our colors are purple and green. I love hydrangea so that will be in our arrangements, along with purple white and green roses. Fiance also picked some purple orchids to put on the tables submerged in water with a floating candle on top ( he is too good at this).

Also, think about what you want on your cocktail tables. I didn’t think of it until the florist brought it up!

Good luck!
