I am 9 weeks pregnant and right now where I live there have been several cases of H1N1, so serious there have even been a few deaths. I am a 5th grade school teacher and even though we are recommended to get the shot, I never have and have been lucky enough to never get the flu. The news and my dr. even are all urging everyone to get the shot this year because it’s bad this season. I guess I am just asking if anyone here has had the flu shot or plans on getting it? I am just so nervous about shots while pregnant, but obviously I want to do what’s best for my baby, Any advice is appreciated. Thanks bees

I never ever got a flu shot either until I was pregnant last year. The docs talked me into it. Definitely get it — the flu while pregnant would be AWFUL since you can’t really take any meds to ease your suffering!

I got it on advice from my OB and my doula. I had no worries about it, and I certainly have no regrets.

As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I got it. And I would definitely recommend it. There’s a particular type that you need to get, so make sure you inform the clinic that you’re pregnant!

There is virtually no risk to getting the flu shot while pregnant (no risk to the fetus whatsoever), and there are serious risks to getting the flu while pregnant – for me it was an absolute no-brainer to get. And I have a very healthy 6 month old now.

I got my flu shot at 16w. Hadn’t had one in years, but it was recommended and safer than actually getting the flu form what I researched.

Yes you should absolutely get it. Getting the flu can cause you to miscarry. Another bonus besides not getting ill is that it can provide immunity for your baby once its born for the first few months when it is too young to get the flu shot.

I have never ever got the flu shot and this year the Dr.’s insisted I get it since I was pregnant. I did, and no flu thus far!

I’ve never gotten the flu and I’ve never gotten the flu shot. I did get it this year since I’m pregnant, though. No issues with it and glad I did since my husband got the flu a few weeks ago and I didn’t get it!
I wouldn’t risk it, but it’s a personal decision. I had a cold in my first trimester and was seriously miserable. I can’t imagine what I would have felt like with flu while pregnant.

@mjwyatt84: I think the flu shot is fine, but the flu nasal mist might be bad because it’s a live attenuated vaccine. Go with whatever your doctor recommends.

Yes, totally safe. More risks with the flu than with the shot. I would go get it ASAP.

@mjwyatt84: Never had the flu shot in my life nor had Darling Husband, but we were both urged to get it, and so we did. I was worried about shots too, but it was a good decision on my part. You are more likely to have complications if you get the flu (and its worse for the mom than the baby) than from the shot itself is what my doc said.
You can ask for a preservative free version of the flu shot too if you are worried about too many additives. I don’t know much about the preservative free flu shot though. I just got what they gave me.

It’s very important, for you but especially for the baby, that you do this. ESPECIALLY since you’re a teacher and come into contact with so many illnesses, and ESPECIALLY since there are bad outbreaks in your area! Please listen to your doctor!!

it is a BAD season. I went to visit my family over Christmas break in Mexico and my aunt passed away while I was there from H1N1. I never saw it coming. Her daughter also had it and almost didn’t make it either. I would get it if you can. In Mexico not everyone is aloud to have the Flu shot. Seems strange to me because it’s available for EVERYONE here.

I’ve never had the flu and had never gotten the flu shot until I got pregnant!
I got the flu shot around 12 weeks.
