Hi all! I haven’t made an official announcement on WB, other than in the 1 yr+ thread, but we just found out we’re finally preggers!! **happy happy dance!!**
So I’m all booked to take a 1.5hr flight this Friday. I’ll be about 5.5 weeks. Now I’ve consulted Dr. Google (I know, I know) and found mostly that it’ll be ok. I’m just such a worrybee and after trying so hard for 2 years, I just wanted to know if even though we’ve gone through fertility treatments, is it still safe to fly so soon??
I asked the RE nurse and her response was “Wellll, do have to go?” So I’m thinking, crap, I have to drive alone for 7.5hrs. I also later called my regular OBGYN nurse and she said “Not a problem at all, not until later in your third trimester”. What do you think? Anyone fly this early?

krystallite: You should be fine. Just tell security you’re pregnant so you don’t have to go through the body scanner. My coworker traveled by plane every week during her pregnancies until she reached the no-fly time (30+ weeks).

krystallite: I travelled at about 12 weeks pregnant or so I think? I can’t recall but it was fall, and I was pregnant in August. Anyway, I asked my doctor, and they said it was safe. I still let them know I was pregnant just in case, but it was fine. I went through the scanners.

You’ll be fine. I found out that I was pregnant when I was home at Thanksgiving and flew back to New York City. I think I was maybe just two or three weeks along. FWIW-I went through the scanners without issue too.

From what I’ve read, flying is perfectly safe for pregnancy and the only reason they say no after 30+ week is the risk of going into labor in air or somewhere away from your regular doctors.

Thanks ladies. Even though we’ve gone through fertility treatments, we’re not any higher risk than anyone else at this point right?

I’ve never heard of higher risk associated with flying and fertility treatments. I flew all through my first and second trimesters without an issue, discomfort in sitting in those damn seats started around the beginning of the third trimester, so I cut it off at 31 weeks (doctor had said I was fine to fly until 34 if I wanted…I did not want to!).

kate02121: Thanks! I couldn’t seem to find much info on this either way.
I appreciate everyone’s feedback, it helps knowing others have flown early as well!

You will be fine. I flew at around 5 weeks, though I didn’t know I was pregnant at the time.

you will be fine – I am flying in in about 10 days and told my doctor. I will be 8 weeks at the time – she said just make sure you get up every hour or at least move around in your seat.

We flew when I was 4-5 weeks. I went through the scanners – didn’t even occur to me until after we were home! I’m ~24 weeks now and so far everything is great!
Congrats on your BFP! 🙂

I flew when I was 6-7 weeks and I went through the scanners one way. I did some research ahead of time and then also asked security about it.

krystallite: I flew at 4 weeks pregnant, again at 8 weeks, and then again at 14 weeks. I was not worried about it at all- the full body scanner is safe to go through. I was a tiny bit worried about miscarrying and being away from my husband (all three times I was traveling without him) but I knew flying wouldn’t cause a miscarriage. Best of luck to you and congratulations!!!

krystallite: I phoned my doc about the same thing yesterday. I had a mc and they seemed a little concerned by this. I’ve also had issues this pregnancy. They said I should be fine but maybe leave it if I can. Mine is not essential so ive decided to leave it but if it’s important you go id do it. I’ve asked at least 20 people (online & IRL) and only 2 expressed concern and most have done it.
Also, I’ve been meaning to congratulate you on the 1+ thread!! I hope you have a very happy and healthy 9 months x
