Traditionally the Brides parents pay for the wedding (uncommon now), the Bridesmaid plan and pay for the bridal shower and the grooms parents pay for the rehearsal dinner. Engagement parties are not usually standard but if someone wants to throw one they can but never is someone expected to throw one.

I understand being hurt that your FH mom threw an engagement party for his older brother but sometimes it only comes down to financial situations at the time or maybe they were soo excited about his wedding because it was the first of their children (unfortunate for you guys but this would be their third time goign through a wedding and this doesn’t mean they aren’t excited just not as quick to make decisions). usually from one wedding to the next you learn things. Maybe they realize that giving you more money in a card at the wedding is more beneficial than an engagement party.

Whatever the reason I understand your frustration but you just can’t compare one to another, every circumstance is different.
