I JUST met with my ob/gyn and even though we aren’t TTC yet she said when we do get there, to take 800mcg per day. She even wrote it down lol

My doc told me 1000mcg (1mg) so that’s what I take.

ETA: We’re both in ON so you’d probably be told the same.

I currently take One a Day Women’s Prenatal and that has 800 mcg of FA. My GP and OB (pre-conception appt) didn’t give me a specific amount to take.

My prenatal has 800 mcg Folic Acid, but I also get a lot of folate from the foods I eat. Eating your vitamins is always recommended when you can.

I be sure to eat a lot of the following foods everyday in some form. usually at least 3 off the list and in large quantities (especially the veggies)

  • lentils (one serving is 90% your RDA!)
  • pintos and other beans
  • spinach and other green leafy veggies
  • Asparagus (basically most green veggies like broccoli, brussels)
  • beets
  • avocado

@ThreeMeers:  Great list! Sunflower seeds are high in folate too.

My prenatal has 600.  You are supposed to be getting at least 400 and not more than 1000 (synthetic).

@ScottishMrs:  yes sunflowers too!, and peanuts are abotu 20% RDA per serving. other nuts too are great.

Basically if you eat a well rounded diet with lots of plant based foods (veggies, fruits, beans, lentils, nuts) of all colors you will get lots of folate in your normal diet.

I take none.  I won’t put that cheap synthetic crap in my body now that I’ve been researching it.  Instead I take the bio active form of folate called methylfolate.  I take about 4mg of that.

@dodgercpkl:  ditto — I took the same dose when I was pregnant.  I take 5mg now that I’m nursing.

@dodgercpkl:  Is that available in just any store or only specialty stores?
