I would definitely have enough seats for everyone, and assigned tables. I know as a guest I prefer to have somewhere to set my purse, jacket, camera while I get food. And I definitely prefer assigned seating so I am not wandering around looking for somewhere to sit.

I know you want mingling but most people at weddings want to talk to the few people they know there, not everyone else. So it is convenient to sit like groups together, like all the cousins or college friends so they get a chance to see each other.

Seats are not as important as tables. If you can have taller pub style tables as well, then you can accomdate 70% of guests with seats and be ok. People need places to set their drinks and food. They won’t care as much about where to set their butts 🙂
