Are you on a BC pill that is triphasic (different levels of hormones throughout the month)? I am looking to switch from a monophasic BC to a triphasic BC and would like some recommendations/feedback regarding some triphasic brands. Thank you! 🙂

I am not currently on a triphasic but I was on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo for about 4 years in my teens. It was great, though there were definitely mood swings associated with each level of hormones to the point where my high-school boyfriend could identify which colour of pill I was taking that week.
Aside from the mood swings (which, for me, were manageable) I got a few more PMS side effects than usual (breast tenderness, PMS cramping, etc) but again, nothing too severe. All in all I liked that pill quite a bit, it helped a lot with my heavy periods.

Just out of curiosity, and maybe to help advise…why are you looking for a triphasic pill? The first BC I ever took was a generic orthotricycline. I think I was on that for a couple years, but that was probably 15 years ago! I don’t remember why I stopped using it. The best BC I ever took was a pregesterone only, or “mini pill.” Fewer hormones, I still had lighter and regular periods, and it stopped my painful cramps for about 4 years. The worst ever was the patch. I had crazy migraines with auras. I am currently using Loestrin and it’s okay but I’m not a huge fan. I can go 6 months without having a period (unnerving for me) and there’s no generic but the company frequently causes problems with their discount card and I end up spending a fortune.
FYI I take BC mainly for dysmenorrhea, but have also never gotten pregnant in the meantime 🙂
Just 1 or 2 more months and no more BC for me! 🙂

Thanks bees! I had a friend who was on orthotricyclen lo, and gained a ton of weight, so I’m a little paranoid about that one, although I know most BCs are similar. I am looking to switch to a triphasic b/c I feel like the monophasic pill is affecting my libido, and read that triphasic BC actually boosted libido in many women. I can’t WAIT to not be on BC anymore!! For me though, it’ll probably be years!

@WhatMaeBee: I don’t know if it increased or decreased my libido overall but libido was also very dependent on where I was in the cycle. I also didn’t gain any weight on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo but I took the generic for Ortho-Cyclen for a while and gained close to 60lbs that I’m still struggling to lose. It’s different for everyone.
