Backstory: I ran out of BC earlier in the year as Darling Husband and I were moving, getting me added to his insurance, all that jazz, and by the time we had it all squared away for me to get more, my sex drive came back so we opted to switch to condoms only.
Which has been fine thus far. No complaints.
On the pill my cycles were clockwork: 28 days. Placebo on Sunday, Aunt Flo on Tuesday.
Since going off it, my first cycle was fairly normal, but then my next cycle was 32 days. Now, I’m on day 34 of this cycle and Aunt Flo still hasn’t dropped by.
So, to the bees who have also stopped using BC: was this something you also experianced? Is this normal? At what point should I start to freak out a little and make a trip to the drug store?

My cycles seem to be about 31-33 days long. I recently stopped using HBC as well but when I was in college and not on the pill my periods got farther and farther apart. Like I was missing entire months. I played lacross, rugby, and have always enjoyed distance running so I was burning so many calories with physcial activity that my body stopped menstruating. I went on the pill because of this. Now I’m using fertilityfriend to chart my body temperatures to see if/when I ovulate and to keep track of my cycles.
If you are concerned you can always schedule an appointment with your women’s health provider to make sure you are ovulating appropriately and don’t have any underlying conditions.

Yes!!! And it still freaks me out! Generally my cycles are about 30-33 days (that was normal before I went on BCP many many many years ago) but I had one cycle that was 45 days. You better believe I peed on a stick. The other problem I have is that I get really tender breasts before my period now (didn’t when I was on BCP), so that freaked me out a little too, lol! Give it a few more days and see what happens.

I want to say it’s normal because that is what is happening to me. My first cycle off BC was 31 days, the next was 52, and the last one was 47. I would give it a few more days or jusy buy a test from the dollar store so you aren’t really wasting your money. But if you were careful and used condoms every time and none broke then I would imagine you should be fine.

Thanks! I suspected that this was normal since BC basially pumps your body full of hormones, and that it would take a while for my body to regulate back to something more “normal”, it just seemed pretty alarming to see “It has been 34 days since your last period” pop up on my tracker.
Pre-BC I was mostly regular… not down to the day like on BC, but it was a roughly 27-30 day cycle for the most part…. so these extra-long cycles were never my norm.
I decided earlier that if I haven’t started by Monday I’m going to go get a test… just in case.

I have had a 37-40 day cycle ever since I went off birth control 3 years ago, I have no idea if it will ever go back to 28 days like it used to be.

That’s happened to me everytime. It takes a few months for your body to get back to normal. I think it took me about 9 actually…

Yup, didn’t get my period for an entire summer after I went off BC. It was convenient– but as you mentioned, highly unnerving.

I have been off for about 8 months, and I am between 30-32 days so far

Thank you for this post. I just stopped birth control two days ago and was wondering what was in store for me and was going to post the same thing.

Once I came off the pill, my cycles slowly stretched out to about 5 weeks. Your body is just finding its natural cycle.

My cycles seem like they’re getting a bit longer too. Also, AF stays around longer–7 straight days, when on BC they were more like 3 or 4 days.

It can take up to a year (sometimes longer!) for your body to regulate itself after being on hormonal BC. When I went off, I had two very light periods in the first six months before they settled down into a 35 day cycle for a few months… then they started stretching out again. Prior to getting pregnant, my cycles were anywhere from 35 – 42 days and that range varied from month to month. Fortunately, I got pregnant with no issue so irregular cycles don’t necessarily have to mean anything is wrong.
Also, strangely enough – my periods are a lot lighter and shorter than they were on BC. With no BC at all, they are three days, which includes one day of moderate flow, followed by two days of light flow and then it’s done.

Funny – before HBC I widely varied how long, on HBC it was somewhere btw 28-32 days. I came off in December 2010 (health reasons, not TTC) and I’ve been spot on 28 days since. It’s almost frightening.
@Ree723: Mine too. Since coming off it’s maybe 3 days max, on HBC more like 5, even 6 days.
Fiance credits (partly) me coming of HBC with the two of us getting our heads on straight and offically pursuing the relationship.

@tinylittlebird: I got off of them this past year and my cycle is all wacked out now. It came one normally and didnt come for another 3 months. The doctor said that was normal. I am still waiting for my sex drive to come back though.
