It might depend on material?  I had a floor-length taffeta Bridesmaid or Best Man dress that was actually to the floor but not a tripping risk because the fabric was stiff enough.  A softer fabric, like chiffon, might need to be hemmed a bit higher due to flow and stretch.  I think an inch is probably ok if all your girls do it (1/2 inch is still preferable), but any more than that would look weird.

I am thinking let page boys carry my train. So i hope it’s as long as possible.

My bridal shop seamstress says she uses a “thumb’s width” off the floor for floor-length dresses.  For my own thumb that’s about 3/4 inch, I’d say anything from 1/2 to 3/4 inch would be good.

It’s supposed to be high enough to pass your hand between the hem and the floor.

Anything above an inch would look weird.  You will see shoes at 1 inch though if it matters to you!

I’m with your bridesmaid, I’d prefer 1/2″ – 1″ off the floor. But that may be because I’m a klutz!

@ItWasntMe:  +1.  I think 1″ is too much, and anything more than that would definitely look like a bad hem job.  I wore a floor length gown as a bridesmaid in September and it just skimmed the ground.  Another Bridesmaid or Best Man who had her dress tailored by the same man leaned over to me during the ceremony and said, “[MOH] clearly didn’t see Tony the Tailor!” because her dress had been hemmed too much and it looked weird.

Also, I am a self-proclaimed klutz — I tore my ACL in high school gym class playing capture the flag!! But I didn’t trip at all that night, even while dancing after a few cocktails 🙂
