We had around 65 and it was perfect.  We wanted smallish so we wouldn’t feel like we had to have all these people we’d have to talk to and have it go by in a blur.  We paid for it ourselves, so our parents had all of 0 say in the guest list (not like they likely would have tried to invite people we didn’t want anyway).  If his parents aren’t paying for their guests, those guests shouldn’t be invited.  Heck, if YOU TWO don’t want them there, they shouldn’t be invited.  Sounds like they are just looking to host a party for their friends on your parents’ dime.  Not cool.  If they want to host a party for their family/friends, they can do it on a day other than your wedding day, and pay for it themselves.

We invited 130 people and had 98 people come.   It was just right for us, we were happy to see all the people who came and the room was not too crowded at all.
