my mother kept her maiden name after marriage. I didnt have a preference when i got married, although looking back i miss writing my signature when it only had 4 letters, i know have to write out 9. I give up after like 6 now a days when i write my signature, lol.

I changed it  the first  time , I was even ‘proud’  to do so (  I offer in mitigation that I  was only 19 and pretty socially unaware lol)   I took my own name back by deed poll after the all-too-soon  divorce and have had it ever since .

Had my now h. and I ever had children we would have hyphenated our names ,but as it  happened, we never needed to.

Before we got together , when I was a much more militant  feminist than I am now,  I played with the idea of creating a new name for myself which owed nothing to male heredity, but just  about then my father died and  it seemed like bad taste at best to jettison his name. So , I’ve still got it, and , as it transpires , will be the last of the family to bear it as a surname, tho my nephew has it as a second middle  name .

This is so much easier where I live (New Zealand) because here we don’t have to legally change our names. I took my husbands name, but I’m free use either my married name, or my birth name as and when I like. The only thing I can’t do is travel internationally with my birth name because my current passport is in my married name. But I could cancel my passport and apply for a new one in my birth name if I really felt like it.

Do you actually have to change your name back if you get divorced and want your old name back? Here you just start going by your birth name again, assuming thats your choice.
