We did 24 spread out around the dining room and dancing tent. We also ordered pinspotting for each of the guest tables, and lanterns for the tent. I think your needs will really depend on the size of your space though. Are you DIYing or using a Lighting Company?

@MissDareDevil: Our lighting company hasw orked at my venue before and they’ve assured me that they’ll be able to sufficiently and dramatically light both rooms, but I don’t know the specifics yet. I’ll probably be having our final appointment with them next month.
If you’re using your DJ, I’d recommend meeting with the DJ at your venue and seeing what he suggests.

I am only having 10 uplights in my room but that is also because the room is busy and has a fireplace and big chandeliers so I didnt’t want to take away from the room.. just enhance it. Is your room very plain?

Find out what type of lights he’s using. A Par 34 is going to give you ten feet, maybe, while an LED bar will go the whole 36′ wall in about a two foot width. So decide. Does everywhere need uplighting? Because then you’ll need the whole 24. Does just the staircase and that one wall need it? Then you can use 12. Does he have small lights? THen you need more.

We are going to have about 6-8 from our DJ to light up the colums in the room and then we will have about 5-6 uplights behind the head table that our venue offers.

We’re meeting with our DJ/Lighting guy at our venue this Saturday to walk thought the uplighting and pinspotting, I’m excited!  Not really sure how many we’ll be using, but I’ll trust his judgement based on the size of the room.

@MissDareDevil: I worked in professional lighting – PM me if you have questions. I know that it’s confusing to figure out what you actually need vs what they are trying to sell. If it makes you feel any better, my Fiance once put together 250 uplights for a lobster fest.
