I bought a few used dresses trying to find the one…they were all shipped in large boxes (24″ x 24″ or so), in a drycleaner’s plastic bag (only one came with the bridal shop bag). They put the hem in first, and folded it like an accordion, back and forth, leaving the bodice and hanger on the top of the dress. If you are concerned about damage during shipping, you could put foam or styrofoam peanuts or even packing paper around it. But most dresses won’t be harmed if they shift in the bags. Just make sure to have it in plastic in case the box gets wet during shipment, as that will protect the dress.

What jenfer described is pretty much how dresses are sent from the manufacturer to the store, too. They put them in plastic, smush them up into the smallest box possible, and ship them. You’ll probably want to pay extra for shipping insurance, too.
